Tom Day (rugby Union)
Tom Day (1907 - 18 September 1980) was a Wales national rugby union team, Wales international rugby union player who played club rugby for Swansea RFC, Swansea. He was awarded 13 caps for Wales and was part of the Welsh side that won the 1931 Five Nations Championship. Day first came to notice while playing for the Wales Secondary Schools, moving to Gorseinon RFC, Gorseinon after leaving school. In 1928 he moved teams to Swansea, at the same time as Claude Davey. He stayed with Swansea for the entirety of his international career and captained them during the 1933/34 season. On 10 October 1931 he was part of the Swansea team that faced the 1931–32 South Africa rugby union tour, touring South Africans, and although losing the game, Day had an outstanding gameBillot (1974), p. 145. at the front of the pack, closing the game down whenever he could. Glanamman
Glanamman ( cy, Glanaman) is a Welsh mining village in the valley of the River Amman in Carmarthenshire. Glanamman has long been a stronghold of the Welsh language; village life is largely conducted in Welsh. Like the neighbouring village of Garnant it experienced a coal-mining boom in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but the last big colliery closed in 1947 and coal has been extracted fitfully since then. History The location of Garnant and Glanamman was known as Cwmamman ("Amman valley") before coal was discovered; until the 18th century it was a remote wilderness with just a few farms and rough mountain roads. Mining appears to have started at Brynlloi in 1757 and small coal workings proliferated in the first half of the 19th century. The arrival of the railway in 1840 meant that coal could be exported on an industrial scale through Llanelli docks, and the construction of two stations at Glanamman and Garnant promoted a distinction between the two communities. Claude Davey
Claude Davey (14 December 1908 – 18 February 2001) was a Wales international rugby union player who played club rugby for several teams, most notably Sale and Swansea. He was awarded 23 caps for Wales and captained his country eight times. Davey was a hard tackling centre and his most famous performance took place on 21 December 1935 when he led Wales to a historic 13–12 victory over the All Blacks at Cardiff. Early career Davey was one of the outstanding Welsh players of his generation, known for his impressive crash-tackling and strong running ability.Thomas (1979), pg 81. Gorseinon is a town within the City and County of Swansea, Wales, near the Loughor estuary. It was a small village until the late 19th century when it grew around the coal mining and tinplate industries. The 1932 Home Nations Championship was the twenty-eighth series of the rugby union Home Nations Championship. Including the previous incarnations as the Five Nations, and prior to that, the Home Nations, this was the forty-fifth series of the northern hemisphere rugby union championship. The 1931 Five Nations Championship was the seventeenth series of the rugby union Five Nations Championship following the inclusion of France into the Home Nations Championship. Including the previous Home Nations Championships, this was the forty-fourth series of the annual northern hemisphere rugby union championship. Ten matches were played between 1 January and 6 April. It was contested by England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Shortly after the tournament, France was expelled from the competition amid allegations of professionalism in the domestic game (rugby union was officially an amateur sport until 1995) and perceived administrative deficiencies. France remained expelled until the 1947 competition after the Second World War. They were readmitted later in 1939, but the outbreak of World War II in Europe halted international rugby until 1947.
