Sir Thomas Cheney (or Cheyne) Order of the Garter, KG (c. 1485 – 16 December 1558) of the Blackfriars, City of London and Shurland, Isle of Sheppey, Kent, was an English administrator and diplomat, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in South East England, south-east England from 1536 until his death. Early life Thomas Cheney, born about 1485, was the son of William Cheney (d.1487) of Shurland Hall near Eastchurch, in the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, Constable of Queenborough Castle and High Sheriff of Kent, Sheriff of Kent in 1477, by his second wife, Margaret Young. Thomas Cheney's father, William, was the eldest surviving of eight sons and a daughter, and at his death in 1487 his property in Kent was inherited by Francis Cheney (d.1512), his son and heir by his first marriage, but was in the possession of Francis Cheney's uncle, John Cheyne, Baron Cheyne until the latter's death without issue in 1499. Thomas Cheney or Cheyney (1694 – 27 January 1760) was a Church of England priest, who served as Dean of Lincoln from 1744 to 1748 and Dean of Winchester from 25 March 1748 to 1760. He was the only son of another Thomas Cheyney, prebendary of Wells Cathedral and master at Winchester College. Thomas Cheney (folklorist)
Thomas Edward Cheney (1901–1993) was an American folklorist who made contributions to the field of Mormon folklore. As one of the first Mormon folklorists, he collected folk songs in Utah and Idaho and authored books and articles on Utah, Idaho, and Mormon folklore. He served as president of the Folklore Society of Utah from 1963 to 1964. Cheney also compiled songs for the American Folklore Society, which were published in 1968. Along with books on Mormon Folklore, Cheney wrote a book about J. Golden Kimball, which was considered controversial. He was also a professor of English at Brigham Young University (BYU) and taught courses in English Romantic literature, ballads, and Mormon folklore. Early life Thomas E. Thomas Edgar Cheney (October 14, 1934 – November 1, 2001) was a Major League Baseball player. Cheney, a right-handed pitcher from Morgan, Georgia, played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Senators in a span of eight seasons from 1957 to 1966. Cheney is most notable for striking out the highest number of batters in a Major League Baseball game. He did so on September 12, 1962, when as a Senator, struck out 21 Baltimore Orioles in 16 innings en route to a 2–1 victory. Professional career St. Louis Cardinals Cheney was signed as an amateur free agent by the St. Louis Cardinals prior to the start of the baseball season. After spending a few years in the minor leagues, he was called up by the Cardinals in , and made his Major League Baseball debut with the team on April 21, 1957. Tom Cheney (born 1954) is an American cartoonist. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia and grew up in Saranac Lake, NY, and later in Watertown, New York. He attended Watertown High School (class of '72), and graduated from the State University of New York at Potsdam in 1976 with a BA in psychology. A contributing artist to ''The New Yorker'' for 42 years, his work has also appeared in over 500 other publications in the United States and other countries, including Esquire, '' National Lampoon'', '' The Harvard Business Review'', ''Mad Magazine'', '' Penthouse'', ''The Wall Street Journal'', ''Punch'', ''Barron's Magazine'', Hustler Magazine, and the "Commies From Mars" comic book series.
