Tom Briggs (rugby League)
Tom Briggs (29 July 1919 – 4 March 1991) was an Australian rugby league footballer from the 1940s. Tom Briggs was a very fine rugby league player from Young, New South Wales. He starred in Rugby League Army teams during World War Two including a match representing NSW against Queensland servicemen held on Bougainville in which he was man of the match. After he returned from the war, Briggs joined the Western Suburbs Magpies in 1946. Tom married in 1946 and moved to the St.George area at the end of the 1947 season.Whittacker/Hudson: The Encyclopedia of Rugby League Players. 1995 Tom Briggs had two brilliant seasons at the St. George Dragons in 1948 & 1949, scoring 16 tries from 17 games. Injuries towards the end of the 1949 season curtailed his career. Tom Briggs died in Sydney on 4 Mar 1991, aged 71. Young, New South Wales
Young is a town in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia and the largest town in the Hilltops Region. The "Lambing Flat" Post Office opened on 1 March 1861 and was renamed "Young" in 1863. Young is marketed as the Cherry Capital of Australia and every year hosts the National Cherry Festival. Young is situated on the Olympic Highway and is approximately 2 hours drive from the Canberra area. It is in a valley, with surrounding hills. The town is named after Sir John Young, the governor of NSW from 1861 to 1867. Penshurst, New South Wales
Penshurst () is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Penshurst is located 17 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George area. Penshurst features low to medium-density housing. It has a predominantly older population however it is increasingly being populated by a new generation of migrant families who are attracted by its proximity to Hurstville. History Penshurst was named after Penshurst, Kent, England. Originally part of the land grant to Robert Townson (1763–1827), the land was acquired in 1830 by John Connell, who left it to his grandsons J.C. and E.P. Laycock. Connell's Bush was subdivided by the Laycocks and the western part sold to Thomas Sutcliffe Mort. The early work in the area was timber-cutting and small farming. The Western Suburbs Magpies (legal name: Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club Ltd) are an Australian rugby league football club based in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 1908, Wests, as they are commonly referred to, were one of the nine foundation clubs of the first New South Wales Rugby League competition in Australia. The club, as a sole entity, departed the top-flight competition in 1999 after forming a 50–50 joint venture with Balmain Tigers to form the Wests Tigers. The club currently fields sides in the NSW State Cup (Canterbury Cup), Ron Massey Cup (Opens), S.G. Ball Cup (Under 18's) and Harold Matthews Cup (Under 16's) competitions. Bougainville Island (Tok Pisin: ''Bogenvil'') is the main island of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, which is part of Papua New Guinea. It was previously the main landmass in the German Empire-associated North Solomons. Its land area is .
