"Tojo" "Tojo Never Made it to Darwin" is a song by Australian Rock music, rock group Hoodoo Gurus. It was released in June 1983 as the second single from their debut studio album, ''Stoneage Romeos''. It was written by their lead singer-guitarist, Dave Faulkner (musician), Dave Faulkner. It was also featured on their first album ''Stoneage Romeos'' (1984), which was produced by Alan Thorne. Tojo in the title refers to the World War II Japanese General and Prime Minister Hideki Tōjō. Hoodoo Gurus are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1981, by the mainstay Dave Faulkner (songwriter, lead singer and guitarist) and later joined by Richard Grossman (bass), Mark Kingsmill (drums), and Brad Shepherd (guitar, vocals, harmonica). Their popularity peaked in the mid- to late 1980s with albums ''Mars Needs Guitars!'', ''Blow Your Cool!'' and ''Magnum Cum Louder''. Hoodoo Gurus had a string of pop-rock singles including " Leilani" (1982), " Tojo" (1983), " My Girl" (1983), "I Want You Back" (1984), " Bittersweet", "Like Wow – Wipeout", and " What's My Scene?". "Santa Never Made It into Darwin" is a charity single, recorded by Bill and Boyd. It was written by the band's William Cate. Funds raised supported the Australian city of Darwin, Northern Territory, following the damage wrought by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, 1974. The song peaked at number 2 on the Australian singles chart. At the 1975 Australian Record Awards it won Song of the Year. It also won APRA Song of the Year at the 1976 Country Music Awards of Australia. Background Bill and Boyd formed in Wellington, New Zealand as a pop and country music duo in 1959 by William "Bill" Cate and William Boyd Robertson. They relocated to Sydney in 1964. In 1970 they signed with independent label, Fable Records, which issued "Santa Never Made It to Darwin" in January 1975. James Baker (musician)
James Lawrence Baker (born 7 March 1954) is an Australian musician, best known as the drummer of various rock and punk rock groups, including the Victims, the Scientists, Hoodoo Gurus, Beasts of Bourbon, and the Dubrovniks. In 2006 Baker was inducted into the West Australian Music Industry Hall of Fame. The following year, Hoodoo Gurus were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Biography Early days Baker grew up in Fremantle, Western Australia, with family roots stretching back in the port city for generations. His father played reserves for the East Fremantle Football Club. In May 2003 Baker told Sylvester Fox of ''Groove Magazine'' about his first drumming gig, "I was in a Beatles covers band. I saw Ringo Starr and I said I want to do that." Baker named Ronnie Bond of the Troggs as his main drumming influence. He then drummed for Black Sun (1973–74), which played original material. The Wrights were a one-off Australian rock supergroup consisting of Nic Cester (of Jet), Bernard Fanning (of Powderfinger), Phil Jamieson (of Grinspoon), Kram (of Spiderbait), Chris Cheney (of The Living End), Davey Lane (of You Am I and The Pictures), and Pat Bourke (of Dallas Crane). They are named after former Easybeats frontman Stevie Wright, the original performer of the song-trilogy " Evie", which was the group's feature song. St Ives is a suburb on the Upper North Shore of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia 18 kilometres north of the Sydney Central Business District in the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council.
