Todor Vlaykov
Todor Genchov Vlaykov, also known by his pseudonym Veselin, was a Bulgarian writer, public figure and politician. His most famous work is the story "Grandfather Slavchova's Granddaughter". His great-grandson is the diplomat  Radko Vlaykov.  Biography He was born on February 13, 1865, in the town of Pirdop. He graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University in 1888. He was the founder and chairman of the Bulgarian Teachers' Union. He was a full member of the BKD (now BAS) from 1900 onwards. In 1890 Vlaykov and Todor Yonchev founded the first Bulgarian cooperative - Mirkovo Mutual Savings Agricultural Association " Oralo" in Mirkovo. Vlaykov was one of the founders and the first leader of the Radical Democratic Party. At the founding of the Democratic Alliance in 1923, he participated in the group that drafted the first program of the new party. Pirdop
Pirdop ( bg, Пирдоп ) is a town located in South-West Bulgaria in Pirdop Municipality of Sofia Province in the southeastern part of the Zlatitsa - Pirdop Valley at 670 m above sea level. It is surrounded by the Balkan Range (also known as the Stara Planina) to the north, Sredna Gora Mountain to the south, and Koznitsa and Galabets saddles to the east and west, respectively. The town has a population of 8,040. Some Aromanians live in Pirdop. Economy The main economic activity is non-ferrous metallurgy. The Pirdop copper smelter and refinery is the biggest in the Balkans and whole of South-Eastern Europe. It was privatized in 1997 for $80,000,000 and is now owned by the German Aurubis. Todor Vlaykov National Literary Prize
The Todor Vlaykov National Literary Prize is a Bulgarian literary award that was established by a decision of the  Pirdop Municipal Council in 2007. It is named after famed Bulgarian literary figure Todor Vlaykov. The award is presented every two years (according to the statute) during 'Vlaykov Day' in Pirdop, usually held around May 24. It consists of a statuette depicting the full-length figure of Todor Vlaykov (the designer of the sculpture is Ivan Lyubenov), as well as a cash prize of BGN 1,000. Vlaykova Cinema is a cinema and cultural hub in Sofia, Bulgaria. Ivan Asen II
Ivan Asen II, also known as John Asen II ( bg, Иван Асен II, ; 1190s – May/June 1241), was Emperor (Tsar) of Bulgaria from 1218 to 1241. He was still a child when his father Ivan Asen I one of the founders of the Second Bulgarian Empire was killed in 1196. His supporters tried to secure the throne for him after his uncle, Kaloyan, was murdered in 1207, but Kaloyan's other nephew, Boril, overcame them. Ivan Asen fled from Bulgaria and settled in the Rus' principalities. Boril could never strengthen his rule which enabled Ivan Asen to muster an army and return to Bulgaria. He captured Tarnovo and blinded Boril in 1218. Initially, he supported the full communion of the Bulgarian Church with the Papacy and concluded alliances with the neighboring Catholic powers, Hungary and the Latin Empire of Constantinople. The Democratic Alliance ( bg, Демократически сговор) was a Bulgarian party that existed between 1923 and 1934 when all parties were banned. The Radical Democratic Party ( bg, Радикалдемократическа партия) is a liberal party in Bulgaria. The party was founded in 1902 (other sources: 1905) by Naičo Canov and other dissidents from the Democratic Party. It was banned in 1934, revived in 1944 and again banned in 1949. Mirkovo ( bg, Мирково, ) is a village in western Bulgaria, part of Sofia Province. It is the administrative centre of Mirkovo Municipality, which lies in the central eastern part of Sofia Province. Todor Yonchev
Todor Yonchev was a Bulgarian teacher and public figure, born on December 9, 1859, in the town of  Lom, Bulgaria Biography He graduated from the Pedagogical Academy of Vienna, Austria in 1881, after which he returned to Bulgaria and became a teacher of chemistry and gymnastics in Shumen. In 1888 he graduated from the chemical and agricultural department of Zurich Polytechnic in Zurich, Switzerland. After his return to Bulgaria he was a teacher in Sadovo and Sofia, as well as a school inspector in Pirdop. Until 1916 he worked in the Ministry of Public Education .
