Tocoi, Florida
Tocoi is a former settlement along the St. Johns River in St. Johns County, Florida. John Westcott represented it in the Florida House of Representative in 1879. Tocoi was the site of a ferry landing and a local rail line to St. Augustine, Florida. The name is said to come from a Native American word for water lily. The Tocoi Creek in the area is a tributary of the St. Johns. A commercial Spanish moss factory was in the area. John Westcott (politician)
John Westcott (June 16, 1807 – December 31, 1888) was an American surveyor and politician from the state of Florida. Westcott served as the surveyor general of Florida and the first president of the Florida Coast Line Canal and Transportation Company. Early life and education Westcott was born in Bridgeton, New Jersey on June 16, 1807. His father, James Westcott Sr., was formerly a newspaper publisher in Washington, D.C. before moving to New Jersey to enter local politics. Westcott's grandfather was a captain in the American Revolutionary War. In 1823, Westcott's father, through his association with the Delaware and Raritan Canal Company, became friends with Samuel L. Southard, one of New Jersey's United States senators. Southard sponsored Westcott for admission into West Point, and Westcott enlisted in the academy on July 1, 1823. Tocoi Creek
Tocoi Creek is a tributary of the St. Johns River in St. Johns County, Florida. Kayakers report seeing abundant wildlife including turtles, alligators, and osprey and what is left of an old steamship dock as they paddle the creek. The creek is named after a Timucuan word that means water lily. The indigenous Timucua lived in the area prior to European contact in the 1500s through about 1800. Its southern bank was once the home to the settlement of Tocoi. The area was a transportation hub in the late 1800s, but it is now considered a ghost town. In 1872, author Harriet Beecher Stowe, who spent winters in nearby Jacksonville from 1867 to 1884, reportedly called the landing at Tocoi Creek "a shed and a sand-bank and a little shanty, where to those who require, refreshments are served." Spanish Moss
Spanish moss (''Tillandsia usneoides'') is an epiphytic flowering plant that often grows upon large trees in tropical and subtropical climates. It is native to much of Mexico, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Central America, South America, the Southern United States, and West Indies. It has been naturalized in Queensland (Australia). It is known as "grandpa's beard" in French Polynesia. Most known in the United States, it commonly is found on the southern live oak (''Quercus virginiana'') and bald cypress (''Taxodium distichum'') in the lowlands, swamps, and marshes of the mid-Atlantic and southeastern states, from the coast of southeastern Virginia to Florida and west to southern Arkansas and Texas. Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward
Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward (August 31, 1844January 28, 1911) was an early feminist American author and intellectual who challenged traditional Christian beliefs of the afterlife, challenged women's traditional roles in marriage and family, and advocated clothing reform for women. In 1868, three years after the Civil War ended, she published ''The Gates Ajar'', which depicted the afterlife as a place replete with the comforts of domestic life and where families would be reunited—along with family pets—through eternity. In her 40s, Phelps broke convention again when she married a man 17 years her junior. Later in life she urged women to burn their corsets. Her later writing focused on feminine ideals and women's financial dependence on men in marriage. She was the first woman to present a lecture series at Boston University.
