Bucerotidae
Hornbills (Bucerotidae) are a family of bird found in tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia and Melanesia. They are characterized by a long, down-curved bill which is frequently brightly coloured and sometimes has a casque on the upper mandible. Both the common English and the scientific name of the family refer to the shape of the bill, "buceros" being "cow horn" in Greek. Hornbills have a two-lobed kidney. They are the only birds in which the first and second neck vertebrae (the atlas and axis respectively) are fused together; this probably provides a more stable platform for carrying the bill. The family is omnivorous, feeding on fruit and small animals. They are monogamous breeders nesting in natural cavities in trees and sometimes cliffs. A number of mainly insular species of hornbill with small ranges are threatened with extinction, namely in Southeast Asia. In the Neotropical realm, toucans occupy the hornbills' ecological niche, an example of convergent evolution. Des ...

Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill
The southern yellow-billed hornbill (''Tockus leucomelas'') is a hornbill found in southern Africa. Yellow-billed hornbills feed mainly on the ground, where they forage for seeds, small insects, spiders and scorpions. This hornbill species is a common and widespread resident of dry thornveldt and broad-leafed woodlands. They can often be seen along roads and water courses. Description left, Adult female in Mapungubwe National Park, South Africa. She has a shorter bill, with shorter casque, than the male. It is a medium-sized bird, in length, in weight and is characterized by a long yellow and down-curved beak. This beak is huge in comparison to its body and can account for up 1/6th of the entire body length. Male beaks are on average 90 mm long while female beaks are an average of 74 mm. Males are generally bigger than females but there is overlap between the sexes. The size difference of the beak is a fairly reliable way of differentiating sex in wild hornbills. ...

Red-billed Hornbill
The red-billed hornbills are a group of hornbills found in the savannas and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. They are now usually split into five species, the northern red-billed hornbill (''Tockus erythrorhynchus''), western red-billed hornbill (''T. kempi''), Tanzanian red-billed hornbill (''T. ruahae''), southern red-billed hornbill (''T. rufirostris'') and Damara red-billed hornbill (''T. damarensis''), but some authorities consider the latter four all subspecies of ''Tockus erythrorhynchus''. Description This group of conspicuous birds have mainly whitish underparts and head, grey upperparts, long tails, and a long curved red bill which lacks a casque. The sexes are similar, but the female has a smaller bill. They are generally large, at long, but the entire group is considered one of the smaller hornbills. Behaviour Breeding During incubation, the female lays three to six white eggs in a tree hole that has been converted to a nest, which is blocked off with a plaster of ...

Southern Red-billed Hornbill
The southern red-billed hornbill (''Tockus rufirostris'') is a species of hornbill in the family Bucerotidae, which is native to the savannas and dryer bushlands of southern Africa. It is replaced by a near-relative, the Damara red-billed hornbill, in the arid woodlands of western Namibia. All five red-billed hornbills were formerly considered conspecific. Subspecies It is usually treated as a monotypic taxon, but two additional subspecies have been proposed: * ''Tockus rufirostris rufirostris'' Sundevall, 1850 — bushveld regions of Transvaal, southern Botswana and southern Zimbabwe * ''Tockus rufirostris degens'' Clancey, 1964 — eastern lowveld * ''Tockus rufirostris ngamiensis'' Roberts, 1932 — northern Namibia to northern Zimbabwe ''T. r. degens'' is the smallest in size, while ''T. r. ngamiensis'' has browner plumage and a more distinct tail bar. The differences are clinal. Description left, Immature bird – ''T. r. rufirostris'' The sexes are similar, but males are ...

Von Der Decken's Hornbill
Von der Decken's hornbill (''Tockus deckeni'') is a hornbill found in East Africa, especially to the east of the East African Rift, from Ethiopia south to Tanzania. It is found mainly in thorn scrub and similar arid habitats. Jackson's hornbill is often treated as a subspecies of it. It was named after the German explorer Baron Karl Klaus von der Decken (1833–1865). Description This species is a small hornbill with blackish upperparts and mainly whitish underparts and head. It has a long tail and a long curved bill which lacks a casque. It is similar to the red-billed hornbill except for the bill colour and the lack of spotting on the wing coverts in both male and female. The species shows sexual dimorphism; the female has a black bill, whereas the male has a red bill with a cream tip and a black cutting edge. Breeding During incubation, the female lays two or three white eggs in a tree hole, which is blocked off with a cement made of mud, droppings and fruit pulp. There is ...

Monteiro's Hornbill
The Monteiro's hornbill (''Tockus monteiri'') is a species of hornbill that is native to the dry woodlands of southwestern Africa. It is a common, near-endemic species in Namibia, with a total population estimated at 340,000 individuals. Description It is a medium-sized bird, in length. With a body mass of , it appears to be the largest hornbill of the relatively diminutive ''Tockus'' genus. The species is characterized by a white belly, black back, with white spots on the wings and white secondary flight feathers. The outer feathers of the long tail are also white. Females are smaller than males and can be recognized by turquoise facial skin. The eyes are black and the beak is red. Range and habitat Its habitat is the savannah and dry thornveldt of northwestern Namibia and southwestern Angola. Habits Unlike other hornbills, which are omnivorous, the Monteiro's hornbill feeds exclusively on insects and other small arthropods. In springtime, Monteiro's hornbills migrate to the s ...

Western Red-billed Hornbill
The western red-billed hornbill (''Tockus kempi'') is a species of hornbill in the family Bucerotidae. It is found from Senegal and Gambia to southern Mauritania and western Mali. There are five species of red-billed hornbills generally recognized now, but all five were once considered conspecific. Some authorities still categorize the group as Northern_red-billed_hornbill, ''Tockus erythrorhynchus'' with the remaining four as its subspecies Description Western red-billed hornbills are small hornbills in the genus Tockus. They have curved red beaks which are more orange on the lower beak and more bright red on the upper beak, with both ending with a dark orange colour. Their heads are greyish white and have black feathers along the back of their heads and neck. They have white plumage on their faces and large dark grey eye rings. Their sclera is dark brown and their pupils are black. Their wings are like all red-billed hornbills, with large and small circles of white feathers s ...
