''To the Bride'', released in 1975, is a two-LP live album featuring Barry McGuire, 2nd Chapter of Acts, and a band called David. The album was culled from four concerts performed in the summer of 1975 and is the first of two live albums that 2nd Chapter of Acts recorded for Myrrh Records, although the majority of the concert is performed by McGuire. The album was re-released on two CDs in 2007 with one song excluded. Barry McGuire
Barry McGuire (born October 15, 1935) is an American singer-songwriter primarily known for his 1965 hit " Eve of Destruction". Later he would pioneer as a singer and songwriter of Contemporary Christian music. Early life McGuire was born in Oklahoma City and his family moved to California when he was two years old. After working as a commercial fisherman, and then going on to become a journeyman pipe fitter, McGuire got a job singing in a bar. In 1961, he released his first single called "The Tree", which was not a hit. He formed a duo with Barry Kane (d. 2013) called Barry & Barry. They performed original folk songs at The Ice House, a small folk club in Pasadena, California before moving on to The Troubadour in Hollywood in the spring of 1962. There they joined The New Christy Minstrels, a large folk group, and McGuire later sang lead vocals on their novelty single "Three Wheels on My Wagon". Washington Phillips
George Washington "Wash" Phillips (January 11, 1880 – September 20, 1954) was an American gospel music, gospel and gospel blues singer and instrumentalist. The exact nature of the instrument or instruments he played is uncertain, being identified only as "novelty accompaniment" on the labels of the 78 rpm records released during his lifetime. Biography He was born in Texas, on January 11, 1880, the son of Tim Phillips (from Mississippi) and Nancy Phillips (, from Texas). People who knew him as an adult recalled him as standing about or tall, and being "stocky" or about ; and that he was a Dipping tobacco, snuff-dipper. Richard Souther
Richard Douglas Trowbridge Souther is an American keyboardist who played on several albums of contemporary Christian and chant-based music. He also placed an album in the Top 10 of ''Billboard's'' New Age Albums chart. In the mid to late 1970s, Souther was a member of A Band Called David, which supplied backing music for the vocal group the 2nd Chapter of Acts. As part of that group, Souther played on all three of 2nd Chapter's albums. During this same period, he also appeared on several religious-themed records by Barry McGuire, Phil Keaggy, Annie Herring and Jamie Owens-Collins. In the mid 1980s, Souther recorded four instrumental albums for the newly-established Meadowlark Records. Matthew Ward (singer)
Matthew Ward (born February 15, 1958) is one of the pioneers of the Jesus music genre, later to be called contemporary Christian music. He is best known as a member of the trio 2nd Chapter of Acts, in which he sang and performed with his sisters Annie Herring and Nellie (Ward) Greisen. During his musical career with the 2nd Chapter of Acts from 1973 to 1988, he also recorded solo albums. Early history Matthew's music and ministry was in no small part forged from personal family tragedy. In 1968 his mother, Elizabeth Ward, died of a brain tumor; two years later his father, Walter, died of leukemia leaving him and his sister, Nellie orphaned. Denomination Blues
"Denomination Blues" is a gospel blues song composed by Washington Phillips (18801954), and recorded by him (vocals and zither) in 1927. In 1938, Sister Rosetta Tharpe (191573) recorded a gospel version of the song under the title "That's All". She subsequently recorded several versions with orchestral accompaniment. In 1972, Ry Cooder recorded the song on his album ''Into the Purple Valley''. The songs Denomination Blues Phillips' song is in two parts, occupying both sides of a 78rpm single (it is over five minutes long, and could not have fitted on a single side because of technical limitations). In 1928, it sold just over 8,000 copies; a considerable number at a time when a typical single by Bessie Smith, "The Empress of the Blues", sold around 10,000. The song is in strophic form: it consists of 17 verses sung to essentially the same music, all with a similar last line. The album was a collection of songs recorded in a series of 18 concerts held throughout the western United States in 1977. It was also 2nd Chapter of Acts' final release for Myrrh Records. Half the album (sides 1, 5 and 6) was performed by 2nd Chapter of Acts and half by Phil Keaggy. The two artists backed each other up throughout.
