Tjanpi Desert Weavers
Tjanpi Desert Weavers is a social enterprise of the NPY Women's Council, representing over 400 women from 26 unique communities in the NPY (Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara) region. Tjanpi is the Pitjantjatjara word for a type of spinifex grass. The weavers harvest and weave local grasses and some other materials to create handmade works and pieces of art. In producing these works, which mostly consist of baskets, jewellery, beads and fibre sculpture, the enterprise encourages women's employment and economic independence. History Grass weaving is not a traditional pursuit in Central Australia, but once shown the basics in 1995, the women quickly applied their existing skills in spinning human hair, animal fur, string and wool. Iwantja Arts
Indulkana (also known as Iwantja, from Iwantja Creek) is an Aboriginal community in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands in South Australia, comprising one of the six main communities on "The Lands" (the others being Ernabella/ Pukatja, Amata, Fregon/ Kaltjiti, Mimili and Pipalyatjara). At the 2016 Australian census, Indulkana had a population of 256. Geography Indulkana (Iwantja) is situated about west of the Stuart Highway and south of Alice Springs. Betty Muffler
Betty Muffler is an Aboriginal Australian artist and ngangkari (healer). She is a senior artist at Iwantja Arts, in Indulkana in Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY Lands), South Australia, known for a series of works on large linen canvases called ''Ngangkari Ngura (Healing Country)''. Early life Muffler was born near Watarru, South Australia, in 1944, of the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara peoples. She refers to a place called Yalungu, south of Waturru, as her land, where emus visit a waterhole. She grew up at the Ernabella Mission in Pukatja in the aftermath of the British nuclear tests at Maralinga and Operation Totem at Emu Field in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Seeing the deaths and dislocation caused by the tests has inspired much of her artwork, and she has expressed healing as a recurrent theme in her work. Yaritji Young
Yaritji Young (born c. 1956) is a Pitjantjatjara woman from Pukatja, a community within the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands and she now lives at Rocket Bore; a homeland north of Amata. Young is a significant Australian Aboriginal artist and senior law women who is to committed to fostering law and culture and this forms a core part of her artistic practice. Most of Young's paintings are drawn from the Tjala (Honey Ant) Dreaming. Young often works with her sisters and their collaborative artworks, in which they are known as ' The Ken Sisters Collaborative', receiving international attention and winning major awards. Tjunkaya Tapaya
Tjunkaya Tapaya (born 1947) is an Aboriginal Australian artist. She is most recognised for her batik work and is one of the best-known batik artists in Australia. Her works also include acrylic paintings, weaving, fibre sculpture, ceramics, wood carving and printmaking. Most of Tapaya's paintings depict places and events from her family's dreaming stories. Her batik work is of the classic Ernabella style, which eschews the Indonesian use of repeated block printed designs in favour of hand-drawn freehand designs or "''walka''". TarraWarra Museum of Art is an art museum in Tarrawarra, Victoria, 45 kilometres northeast of Melbourne. Founded by philanthropists and art collectors Eva and Marc Besen, it is the first museum of art in Australia supported by a significant private endowment. Fiona Margaret Hall, AO (born 16 November 1953) is an Australian artistic photographer and sculptor. Hall represented Australia in the 56th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2015. She is known as "one of Australia's most consistently innovative contemporary artists." Many of her works explore the "intersection of environment, politics and exploitation".
