Tirukalukundram taluk or Thirukalukundram taluk ( ta, திருக்கழுகுன்றம் வட்டம்) is a taluk of Chengalpattu district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The sacred town, Tirukalukundram is the present taluk headquarters. Formerly, the headquarters of the taluk was the town of Chengalpattu, which is a now a Taluk head of the newly formed namesake Taluk. Demographics According to the 2011 census, the taluk of Tirukalukundram had a population of 196,807 with 99,381 males and 97,426 females. There were 980 women for every 1000 men. The taluk had a literacy rate of 70.91. Child population in the age group below 6 was 10,102 Males and 9,866 Females. History This taluk was earlier, a part of the Kanchipuram district until the district was bifurcated and a new Chengalpattu district was created. Tirukalukundram also known as Tirukazhukundram is a panchayat town and Taluk head of Tirukalukundram taluk in Chengalpattu district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is famous for the Vedagiriswarar temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. History Tirukazhukundram's name is derived from ''kazhughu'', meaning eagle. At one time, two eagles soared above this Shiva hilltop temple every day at lunch time, and the priest at the temple gave them food as a ritual. According to legend, these eagles were not ordinary eagles, but two rishis whom a curse had transformed into birds. Chengalpattu, previously known as Chingleput, is a city and the headquarters of Chengalpattu district of the state Tamil Nadu, India. The town is located near to the industrial and IT hub. Kanchipuram District
Kancheepuram district is one of the 38 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The area comprising the present day Kancheepuram district was earlier a part of Chingleput district. The original Chingleput district was split in 1997 into form the present day Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. On 18 July 2019, Chengalpattu district was carved out of Kanchipuram district, with suburbs from Chengalpet towards Chennai under the district headquarters in Chengalpet.
