Tiradentes Palace
The Tiradentes Palace ( pt, Palácio Tiradentes), was inaugurated on 6 May 1926 and is located in the Centro neighborhood (''bairro''), next to the Paço Imperial in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was the former seat of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, between 1926 and 1960, and is the current seat of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro. History First building The Tiradentes Palace replaced another building that once occupied the same spot. The construction of the first building, called ''Casa de Câmara e Cadeia'' (literally: House of Chamber and Jail), was requested by the local government of Rio de Janeiro in 1631. It was built in 1640 and housed the three aldermans of Rio de Janeiro and a jail. They were elected by indirect vote, for a one year term, and took care of the city's finances. Epitácio Pessoa
Epitácio Lindolfo da Silva Pessoa (; 23 May 1865 – 13 February 1942) was a Brazilian politician and jurist who served as 11th president of Brazil between 1919 and 1922, when Rodrigues Alves was unable to take office due to illness, after being elected in 1918. His period of government was marked by military revolts that would culminate in the Revolution of 1930, which brought Getúlio Vargas into control of the federal government. Tomé De Sousa
Tomé de Sousa (1503–1579) was the first governor-general of the Portuguese colony of Brazil from 1549 until 1553. He was a nobleman and soldier born in Rates, Póvoa de Varzim. The Independence Centenary International Exposition ( pt, Exposição Internacional do Centenário da Independência) was a World Expo held in Rio de Janeiro from September 7, 1922 to March 23, 1923, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Brazil's Independence. The expo happened during the Epitácio Pessoa Administration and was regarded as an opportunity to show off Brazil's growing industries and commercial opportunities. Federal District Of Brazil (1891–1960)
The Federal District (Portuguese language, Portuguese: Distrito Federal) was an administrative division of Brazil created by the Brazilian Constitution of 1891. During the Empire of Brazil the administrative unit that corresponded to this territory was designated the Neutral Municipality (''Município Neutro).'' It was a legal entity under public law until 1960, in the territory corresponding to the current municipality of Rio de Janeiro. With the transfer of the capital to the recently created city of Brasília, the new Federal District (Brazil), Federal District was created in the Brazilian Highlands in 1960.
