Tipperary North (Dáil Constituency)
Tipperary North was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas, from 1948 to 2016. The constituency elected 3 deputies ( Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs). The method of election was proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). History and boundaries It was created for the 1948 general election when the former Tipperary constituency was divided into Tipperary North and Tipperary South. The constituency underwent a significant revision to its boundaries at the 2007 general election. A population of 4,276 in the former Roscrea No 2 Rural District was transferred into constituency from the Laois–Offaly constituency. As well as the administrative county of North Tipperary and some parts of South Tipperary, it also included the southern tip of County Offaly. Dáil Constituencies
There are 39 multi-member electoral districts, known as Dáil constituencies, that elect 160 TDs (members of parliament), to Dáil Éireann, Ireland's lower house of the Oireachtas, or parliament, by means of the single transferable vote, to a maximum term of five years. Electoral law Article 16.2 of the Constitution of Ireland outlines the requirements for constituencies. The total number of TDs is to be no more than one TD representing twenty thousand and no less than one TD representing thirty thousand of the population, and the ratio should be the same in each constituency, as far as practicable, avoiding malapportionment. Under the Constitution, constituencies are to be revised at least once in every twelve years in accordance with the census reports, which are compiled by the Central Statistics Office every five years. Templemore
Templemore () is a town in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is a civil parish in the historical barony of Eliogarty. It is part of the parish of Templemore, Clonmore and Killea in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. The 2011 Census results show that the town's population decreased by 13.8% from 2,255 in 2006 to 1,943 in 2011. Location and access Templemore is the eighth largest town in County Tipperary. The N62 national route connects the town to the main Dublin-Limerick motorway ( M7 – Junction 22) and Roscrea north of the parish. Travelling south, the route connects to Thurles and then the main Dublin-Cork motorway ( M8 – Junction 6 Horse and Jockey). The N62 originates in Athlone. To the east, the R433 connects the town to the M8 at a more northerly point (Junction 3) via the villages of Clonmore, Errill and the town of Rathdowney in County Laois. John Ryan (Irish Politician)
John Joseph Ryan (17 June 1927 – 3 April 2014) was an Irish Labour Party politician from Nenagh, County Tipperary. He was an unsuccessful candidate at the 1969 general election, but was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1973 general election as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Tipperary North constituency. He was re-elected at each subsequent general election until he lost his seat at the 1987 general election. He was elected to the Industrial and Commercial Panel of the 19th Seanad in 1989. At the 1992 general election he re-gained his Dáil seat in Tipperary North. He retired at the 1997 general election. Thomas Dunne (10 March 1926 – 3 August 1990) was an Irish Fine Gael politician and Teachta Dála (TD) for Tipperary North from 1961 to 1977. Daniel Morrissey (28 November 1895 – 4 November 1981) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as Minister for Justice from March 1951 to June 1951, Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1948 to 1951 and Leas-Cheann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann from 1928 to 1932. Mary Bridget Ryan (; 31 January 1898 – 8 February 1981) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. She was a member of Cumann na mBan and a founder member of Fianna Fáil. She was first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Tipperary constituency at the 1944 general election. Her husband Martin Ryan was a TD for the same constituency from 1933 until his death in 1943.
