Tiny Desk
Tiny Desk Concerts is a video series of live concerts hosted by NPR Music at the desk of ''All Songs Considered'' host Bob Boilen in Washington, D.C. The first Tiny Desk Concert came about in 2008 after Boilen and NPR Music editor Stephen Thompson left South by Southwest frustrated that they couldn't hear the music over the crowd noise. Thompson joked that the musician, folk singer Laura Gibson, should just perform at Boilen's desk. A month later Boilen arranged for her to do just that, making an impromptu recording and posting it online. The name is taken from Boilen's 1970s psychedelic dance band called Tiny Desk Unit. The series has previously drawn criticism for narrowness in the musical genres it includes—described as focused on " hipster-infused indie rock" by Zachary Crockett at ''Vox''—to the exclusion of genres like country and hip-hop. Phish
Phish is an American rock band formed in Burlington, Vermont, in 1983. The band is known for musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of genres, and a dedicated fan base. The band consists of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, all of whom perform vocals, with Anastasio being the lead vocalist. The band was formed by Anastasio, Gordon, Fishman and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, who were joined by McConnell in 1985. Holdsworth departed the band in 1986, and the lineup has remained stable since. Phish began to perform outside of New England in the late 1980s and experienced a rise in popularity in the mid 1990s. In October 2000, the band began a two-year hiatus that ended in December 2002, but they disbanded again in August 2004. Quinn Christopherson
Quinn Christopherson is an American singer-songwriter. He won the 2019 Tiny Desk Contest with his entry "Erase Me," a song exploring his experience coming out as a transgender man. Christopherson was recognized by NPR for his submission in the 2018 contest won by Naia Izumi. Early life Christopherson was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. He is Athabaskan through his mother and Iñupiat through his mother and father. Christopherson grew up with his mother's Athabaskan family. His maternal grandmother was a storyteller from Tazlina, Alaska who later moved to Anchorage. Career Christopherson was recognized by NPR for his 2018 entry to the Tiny Desk Contest won by Naia Izumi. Naia Izumi
Naia Izumi is an American virtuoso guitarist and singer songwriter from Columbus, Georgia. Early life Izumi received his first guitar by age 10. He learned how to play the instrument in a closet, hiding from his father, who disapproved of his interest in creating music. His mother is a choir director. At the age of 16, Izumi was diagnosed with autism. He is open about being autistic, and describes autism as "not a problem but instead a unique brain chemistry one can use to accomplish the unexpected". Career Izumi began his music career busking on the streets of Los Angeles. Filmaker, Suzuya Bobo, met Izumi in LA and offered to create a music video for him. Tank and the Bangas is an American musical group based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The band won the 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Contest and in November 2019, they were nominated in the Best New Artist category for the 2020 Grammy Awards. They have released three studio albums, ''Thinktank'' (2013), ''Green Balloon'' (2019), and ''Red Balloon'' (2022). Gaelynn Lea
Gaelynn Lea Tressler (born January 21, 1984) is an American folk singer, violinist, public speaker and disability advocate from Duluth, Minnesota. She won NPR's 2016 Tiny Desk Contest. Early life Gaelynn Lea was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic condition that causes complications in the development of bones and limbs. Lea became impassioned by classical music from an early age, and in fourth grade a teacher took notice and encouraged Lea to pursue music after she had the class's only perfect score on a music listening test. Lea developed a technique for violin which involved holding the bow "like a bassist" with the body of the instrument placed in front of her, like a cello, and attached to her foot so it wouldn't slip when she played. Lucius is an American four-piece indie pop band. The group was founded by lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, joined by drummer Dan Molad, guitarist Peter Lalish, and, formerly, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Burri.
