Hillsborough County is the most populous county in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. As of the 2020 census, the population was 422,937, almost one-third the population of the entire state. Weston Observatory (Manchester, New Hampshire)
The Weston Observatory is a historic folly on Oak Hill, the high point of Derryfield Park in Manchester, New Hampshire. Built in 1897, the granite tower is a prominent local landmark, given to the city by James A. Weston, a Manchester native who served twice as governor of New Hampshire. The tower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Description and history The Weston Observatory is located near the center of Derryfield Park, at the summit of Oak Hill, a prominence that affords fine views of the city to the west. It is an octagonal granite tower standing tall. Its base consists of several large pieces of cut granite, with the entrance at the west side, surmounted by a lintel engraved with Weston's name. Gill Stadium is a sporting stadium located in Manchester, New Hampshire. It is one of the oldest concrete-and-steel ballparks in the United States. The venue, which mainly hosts amateur baseball and football contests, has a capacity of 3,012. Beech Street Grounds Children and organized amateur teams had played baseball since at least 1880 in the area east of the Valley Cemetery, which was known as "the Plains." A ballpark called the Beech Street Grounds was built on the site of Gill Stadium at the corner of Beech and Valley Streets, on land owned by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. The park had a wooden fence and two wooden grandstands. Its main entrance was located on Beech Street. This was near third base, and home plate was in the field's southwest corner.Scott C. Stark Park
Stark Park is a city park located on the north side of Manchester, New Hampshire. It is a parcel of land between River Road and the Merrimack River, which was once part of the larger farm property of American Revolutionary War hero John Stark. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2010. History and description The centerpieces of the park are the Stark Burial Ground, where Stark and some of his family are interred, and the 1948 bronze equestrian statue of Stark made by sculptor Richard Henry Recchia. The park was formally opened in 1893, making it one of the city's oldest parks (only Derryfield Park is older). It was originally designed as a typical Victorian-era park, with winding lanes, and a mix of woodlands, lawns, and gardens. Elliot Hospital
Elliot Hospital is an acute care hospital in Manchester, New Hampshire, United States. The Elliot was established as a charitable trust in 1880, was legally incorporated as a not-for-profit organization by an act of the New Hampshire Legislature in 1881, and opened its doors as the first community general hospital in New Hampshire on April 17, 1890. Today the hospital has 296 beds and is a regional trauma center (American College of Surgeons Level II) for the city and the surrounding region. Goffstown is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 18,577 at the 2020 census. Saint Anselm College
Saint Anselm College is a private Benedictine liberal arts college in Goffstown, New Hampshire. Founded in 1889, it is the third-oldest Catholic college in New England. Named for Saint Anselm of Canterbury (Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109), the college continues to have a fully functioning and independent Benedictine abbey attached to it, Saint Anselm Abbey. As of 2017, its enrollment was approximately 2,000. According to the college, the student body is selected not only for their academic abilities but also for their personal character. The Harrington-Smith Block, formerly known as the Strand Theater and the Manchester Opera House, is a historic commercial building at 18-25 Hanover Street in the heart of Manchester, New Hampshire. Built in 1881 to a design by John T. Fanning for two prominent local developers, the building is an expansive rendition of Queen Anne styling in brick and stone. It housed the city's premier performance venue for many years, and was an early home of the influential ''Manchester Union Leader'', the state's major daily newspaper. The Ash Street School is a historic schoolhouse in Manchester, New Hampshire. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. The school occupies the city block bounded by Ash, Bridge, Maple, and Pearl Streets. Description The school building is a French style Second Empire three story brick building. Its windows are tall and narrow with rounded tops, and are slightly recessed from the facade in a square niche; the window niches on the second floor have a further decorative brickwork border on top. The building's most prominent feature is its clock tower, which rises four stories, and is topped by a mansard roof. Building of the schoolhouse took place in 1872 and 1874.
