Kingston Upon Hull
Kingston upon Hull, usually abbreviated to Hull, is a port city and unitary authority in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It lies upon the River Hull at its confluence with the Humber Estuary, inland from the North Sea and south-east of York, the historic county town. With a population of (), it is the fourth-largest city in the Yorkshire and the Humber region after Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford. The town of Wyke on Hull was founded late in the 12th century by the monks of Meaux Abbey as a port from which to export their wool. Renamed ''Kings-town upon Hull'' in 1299, Hull had been a market town, military supply port, trading centre, fishing and whaling centre and industrial metropolis. Port Of Hull
The Port of Hull is a port at the confluence of the River Hull and the Humber Estuary in Kingston upon Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Seaborne trade at the port can be traced to at least the 13th century, originally conducted mainly at the outfall of the River Hull, known as The Haven, or later as the Old Harbour. In 1773, the Hull Dock Company was formed and Hull's first dock built on land formerly occupied by Hull town walls. In the next half century a ring of docks was built around the Old Town on the site of the former fortifications, known as the Town Docks. The first was The Dock (1778), (or The Old Dock, known as Queen's Dock after 1855), followed by Humber Dock (1809) and Junction Dock (1829). Londesborough Barracks
Londesborough Barracks is a military installation in Kingston upon Hull, England. History The building was designed as the headquarters of the 1st Yorkshire (East Riding) Rifle Volunteer Corps and was completed in 1864. The barracks were named after Lord Londesborough, honorary colonel of the corps. This unit evolved to become the 1st Volunteer Battalion, The East Yorkshire Regiment in 1883 and the 4th Battalion, The East Yorkshire Regiment in 1908. The battalion was mobilised at the drill hall in August 1914 before being deployed to the Western Front. The 1st and 2nd East Riding Batteries and Ammunition Column of the II Northumbrian Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, were also based at Londesborough Barracks, although their brigade HQ was at Wenlock Barracks in Anlaby Road. Hull School Of Art
The Hull School of Art and Design (previously the Hull School of Art) is an art school in Kingston upon Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. History Founded in 1861, classes were originally given in a suite of upstairs chambers at the ''Public Assembly Rooms'', now the New Theatre. In 1878, the School of Art had moved to a Georgian town house on Albion Street. In 1901, an Anlaby Road site was acquired from the ''North Eastern Railway Company'', and an architectural competition advertised. The winning design for a new Hull School of Art was produced by the Bloomsbury firm of ''Lanchester, Stewart and Rickards''; the building was completed in April 1905. In 1930 the school at Anlaby Road became ''Hull College of Arts and Crafts''. Pearson Park
Pearson Park, originally known as the People's Park is a park in the west of Kingston upon Hull, England. It is situated about north-west of the city centre of Hull with its main entrance on Beverley Road and its western boundary adjoining Princes Avenue. The park was established in 1862 through the gift of land by Zachariah Pearson, and was the first public park in the city. History During the Victorian period the lack of or need for public spaces for working classes to exercise, or otherwise enjoy themselves became a public cause; in 1833 a parliamentary select committee on Public Walks published a paper which promoted the need for open green spaces in cities. The Hull and Holderness Railway was a branch line in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England that connected the city of Kingston upon Hull with the seaside resort of Withernsea via the town of Hedon and the villages of Keyingham and Patrington. History Background An early proposal for a railway eastwards from Hull into Holderness was made in 1845 by the York and North Midland Railway for a line from a junction on a line to the east Dock ( Victoria Dock) at Drypool to Patrington via Hedon; the Patrington line was not included in the resultant acts of 1846. A second attempt at a line was promoted by Hull businessman Anthony Bannister, with the intention of linking Hull with the rich agricultural area of South Holderness, and the development of a coastal village (Withernsea) into a new seaside resort. Hull And Selby Railway
The Hull and Selby Railway is a railway line between Kingston upon Hull and Selby in the United Kingdom which was authorised by an act of 1836 and opened in 1840. As built the line connected with the Leeds and Selby Railway (opened 1834) at Selby, with a Hull terminus adjacent to the Humber Dock. Sculcoates
Sculcoates is a suburb of Kingston upon Hull, north of the city centre, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. For many centuries, much of what was called Hull came within the parish of St Mary's Church. Sculcoates railway station closed on 9 June 1912. Amenities Sculcoates has a library, a post office, a high school, two primary schools and a swimming bath called Beverley Road Baths. The baths was opened in 1905, and underwent a £3.75 million refurbishment from June 2020 until reopening in August 2021. The baths are a Grade II Listed building. Drypool
Drypool (''archaic'' DripoleAlso Dritpole, Dritpol, Dripold, Dripol, Dridpol) is an area within the city of Kingston upon Hull, England. Historically Drypool was a village, manor and later parish on the east bank of the River Hull near the confluence of the Humber Estuary and River Hull; it is now part of the greater urban area of Kingston upon Hull, and gives its name to a local government ward. Modern Drypool ward is a mixture of light industrial developments and housing, mainly terraced, as well as the post 1980s housing development 'Victoria Dock Village' built on the infilled site of the former Victoria Dock.
