This is a timeline of Capital London, from its initial period as an Independent Local Radio station for Greater London to the present day CHR network serving most of the UK. 1970s * 1970 ** Radio Capital, later to become Capital London, was formed in early 1970 by Nicholas Vincent-Brown, David Maule-ffinch and one other friend Tony Parmiter with the intent to apply for London's Independent Local Radio general entertainment licence. In late 1970, future brother-in-law's Vincent-Brown and Maule-ffinch's father-in-law, Barclay Barclay-White, became involved. Capital London
Capital London is a radio station owned and operated by the Global media company as part of its national Capital FM Network. As Capital Radio it was launched in the London area in 1973 as one of Britain's first two commercial radio stations. Its brief was to entertain, while its opposite number, London Broadcasting (LBC), was licensed to provide news and information. In search of a larger audience in 1974, Capital Radio rapidly moved from a general and entertainment station with drama, features, documentaries and light music to a more successful pop music-based format. In 1988 it became two stations: 95.8 Capital FM and Capital Gold. After some national expansion with the purchase of other radio stations the Capital Radio Group merged with GWR Group in 2005 to form GCap Media which in turn was taken over by Global Radio in 2008. Tommy Vance
Richard Anthony Crispian Francis Prew Hope-Weston (11 July 1940 – 6 March 2005), known professionally as Tommy Vance, was an English radio broadcaster. He was an important factor in the rise of the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM), along with London-based disc jockey Neal Kay, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Vance was one of the first radio hosts in the United Kingdom to broadcast hard rock and heavy metal in the early 1980s, providing the only national radio forum for both bands and fans. The ''Friday Rock Show'' that he hosted gave new bands airtime for their music and fans an opportunity to hear it. He used a personal tag-line of "TV on the radio". His voice was heard by millions around the world announcing the Wembley Stadium acts at Live Aid in 1985. Kerry Juby
Kerry Juby (3 January 1948 – July 2003) was born in Bexley, South London and was a radio DJ who worked for Pirate Radio Station Radio Caroline in the 1960s (initially as an engineer) under the name Kerry Clarke. Brian Arthur Lovell Rust (19 March 1922 – 5 January 2011) was an English jazz discographer. Career Rust was born in 1922 in Golders Green, then part of the Municipal Borough of Hendon in Middlesex. He collected records from the age of five, but his most significant purchase was aged 14, when he acquired a copy of "Ostrich Walk" by the Original Dixieland Jass Band. After leaving school, Rust became a bank clerk. During the Second World War, he was a conscientious objector, and worked as an auxiliary fire officer. After the war, he returned to being a bank clerk. He worked in the BBC's record library from 1945 to 1960, and supervised broadcasting selections. Susan Stranks
Susan Stranks (born 2 December 1938) is a British actress and TV presenter. Career Born in London, Stranks was ten years old when she played the role of the younger Emmeline Foster in the romantic adventure film '' The Blue Lagoon'' (1949). She then played Janet Smith, the young sister of Ann Todd, in the David Lean film '' Madeleine'' (1950). Stranks played a young student in the crime drama ''Sapphire'' (1959), and had a small part as a schoolgirl in the train scenes of '' The 39 Steps'' (also 1959) starring Kenneth More. Marsha Hunt (born April 15, 1946) is an American actress, novelist, singer and former model, who has lived mostly in Britain and Ireland. Robin Houston (born London, 1947) is a British voiceover artist and former announcer, radio and television newsreader and quiz show host. After starting his career as an announcer and stage manager, he became one of the pioneers of commercial radio in the United Kingdom. Nicky Horne (born 3 September 1950) is an English DJ, who has worked for a variety of radio stations, including Capital Radio. Career Horne worked as a road manager for Emperor Rosko in 1969, before presenting shows on BBC Radio 1, from 1970 to 1973. Horne was one of the original line-up on London's Capital Radio, where he presented shows such as ''Your Mother Wouldn't like it'', ''Mummy's Weekly'' & ''6 of the Best''. Joan Shenton
Joan Alicia Shenton (born 16 March 1943) is a British broadcaster who has produced and presented programmes for radio and television. Shenton is known as an exponent of the ideas of AIDS denial. Early life Shenton was born in Antofagasta, Chile to an English father and Anglo-Chilean mother. She lived in Chile, Argentina, Guatemala and Venezuela.
