Time Stands Still (film)
''Time Stands Still'' ( hu, Megáll az idő) is a 1982 Hungarian film about two brothers and the woman they both love, all living in Budapest during the uprising of 1956. It stars István Znamenák, Henrik Pauer, Sándor Sőth, Anikó Iván and Lajos Őze and was directed by Péter Gothár. Popular among audience and critics, it won the Award of the Youth at Cannes, the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the award for Best Director at the Tokyo International Film Festival. The film was also selected as the Hungarian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 55th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. The film was chosen to be part of the New Budapest Twelve, a list of Hungarian films considered the best in 2000. Hungary has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since 1965. Only France has a longer unbroken streak entering the Foreign Oscar competition. This is a list of submissions to the 55th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. The Budapest Twelve is a list of 12 Hungarian films considered the best from the period between 1948 and 1968. The films were chosen in secret ballot of the Hungarian film industry in 1968. Budapest Twelve The International Federation of Film Critics ''(FIPRESCI)'' held its annual conference in Budapest in 1968, the year that marked the 20th anniversary of the nationalization of the Hungarian film industry. The 55th Academy Awards were presented April 11, 1983, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. The ceremonies were presided over by Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore, Richard Pryor, and Walter Matthau. Louis Gossett Jr. became the first African-American actor to win Best Supporting Actor for his performance as the tough and principled drill instructor Emil Foley in '' An Officer and a Gentleman''. Bhanu Athaiya also became the first Indian to win an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Gandhi. This marked the first of 28 consecutive years where a Barbara Walters interview special aired before the ceremony.
