Time Circle, 1968–1972
Time Circle is a compilation album by Spirit, issued in 1991. This set draws heavily from the four albums released by the original line-up on Ode Records and Epic Records. It also includes some outtakes and versions of songs from then unreleased soundtrack work ( Model Shop ). At the time that this set was released, ''Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus'' was the only studio album by the original group still in print. Several of the outtakes were later included on the 1996 reissues of the first four albums. The remixes of the tracks on '' The Family That Plays Together'' (necessitated because the master mix was lost shortly after the album's release) are different from the 1996 re-release. Spirit (band)
Spirit was an American rock band founded in 1967 and based in Los Angeles. Their most commercially successful single in the United States was "I Got a Line on You". They were also known for their albums, including their self-titled debut album, '' The Family That Plays Together'', '' Clear'', and ''Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus''. Original lineup The original lineup of the group evolved from a Los Angeles band, the Red Roosters, which included Randy California (born Randy Craig Wolfe; guitars, vocals), Mark Andes (bass) and Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion). With the addition of California's stepfather Ed Cassidy on drums, and keyboard player John Locke, the new band was originally named the ''Spirits Rebellious'' (after a book by Kahlil Gibran), but the name was soon shortened to Spirit. Mastering, a form of audio post production, is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device (the master), the source from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as pressing, duplication or replication). ''The Adventures of Kaptain Kopter & Commander Cassidy in Potato Land'' was originally recorded by Randy California and Ed Cassidy during the 1972/73 hiatus period of Spirit. A concept album of sorts, interspersed with dialogue, its original scheduled release in May 1973 was cancelled by Epic Records. It was eventually released in an abridged form in 1981, with the first half as new recordings and the second comprising original recordings remixed with overdubs. A reworked and fuller version, still somewhat erroneously credited to Spirit, was released in 2006 and remains available as ''The Original Potato Land''. ''Clear'' is the third studio album by American rock music, rock band Spirit (band), Spirit. It was released in September 1969 by Ode Records. The album was written largely in the wake of Spirit's work on the soundtrack to the 1968 film ''Model Shop (film), Model Shop''. Several of the band members have said that they felt there wasn't enough time for developing the album after releasing two albums in 1968, recording a soundtrack and constantly touring. The album contains "So Little Time To Fly", "Dark Eyed Woman" and "New Dope In Town", as well as three instrumentals. "I Got a Line on You" is a rock song by American rock band Spirit, originally recorded during the sessions for their second album, '' The Family That Plays Together'', between March 11 and September 18, 1968. Widely considered to be a rock classic, the song was composed by guitarist/singer Randy California and produced by Lou Adler. The single credits engineering by Eric Wienbang. Released as a single ahead of the album by Ode Records in the US in October 1968, it began a slow rise up the charts. It was picked up by college radio in late November. It was the second single released by the band. ''The Family That Plays Together'' is the second album by the American rock band Spirit. It was released by Ode Records in December 1968. It was voted number 575 in Colin Larkin's ''All Time Top 1000 Albums'' 3rd Edition (2000)''.'' The cover was photographed at the Sunset Highland Motel, 6830 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California, across the street from Hollywood High School. Title The title alludes to the slogan "The family that prays together stays together", created by ad-writer Al Scalpone for the Family Rosary Crusade and popular in American and British parlance beginning in the 1940s. During this time the band lived together in a house in Topanga, California, near Los Angeles. Model Shop (album)
''Model Shop'' is a 2005 album by the Los Angeles group, Spirit, which collects the material they recorded in 1968, for the soundtrack to Jacques Demy's film '' Model Shop''. Chronologically, the album's material falls in between their second and third albums, '' The Family That Plays Together'' (1968) and '' Clear'' (1969) respectively. For his film, director Jacques Demy wanted a band that captured the vibe of Los Angeles as he saw it. After hearing Spirit perform in an L.A. club, he decided that they would be the perfect group for his film's soundtrack. However, the film itself was considered a failure and no soundtrack album was released at the time. Most of the material remained unreleased until 2005, following the discovery of a master tape of the original mono mixes.
