Tillinghast Mill Site
The Tillinghast Mill Site is an historic industrial site in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. The site is the location of a cotton mill established in 1812 most likely by Allin Tillinghast and Joseph Joslyn Tillinghast. The mill was more formally known as the Mount Hope Factory. The mill initially produced cotton yarn, but later made printed cloth, carpet, and twine. At its height the area included 25 mill worker houses as well as the waterworks, wood frame mill structure, and four story factory. The mill was in operation until at least 1905, but now only the foundational remnants of the mill and the waterworks remain. The mill site was purchased by the town of East Greenwich in 1969 and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. East Greenwich, Rhode Island
East Greenwich is a town and the county seat of Kent County, Rhode Island. The population was 14,312 at the 2020 census. East Greenwich is the wealthiest municipality within the state of Rhode Island. It is part of the Providence metropolitan statistical area and the Greater Boston combined statistical area. Formed as Greenwich in 1677, it was named for Greenwich, England. It was renamed Dedford in 1686 but reverted to its original name in 1689. In 1741 the more rural western three-quarters of the town was set off as West Greenwich, the remaining quarter of it thenceforth being called East Greenwich. Until 1854, it was one of the five state capitals for Rhode Island. The General Assembly, when meeting in East Greenwich, used the local courthouse, which is today the town hall. Cotton Mills
A cotton mill is a building that houses spinning or weaving machinery for the production of yarn or cloth from cotton, an important product during the Industrial Revolution in the development of the factory system. Although some were driven by animal power, most early mills were built in rural areas at fast-flowing rivers and streams using water wheels for power. The development of viable steam engines by Boulton and Watt from 1781 led to the growth of larger, steam-powered mills allowing them to be concentrated in urban mill towns, like Manchester, which with neighbouring Salford had more than 50 mills by 1802.
