Tilley is a hamlet in southern Alberta, Canada within the County of Newell. It is located approximately 22 km southeast of the City of Brooks and 78 km northwest of the City of Medicine Hat. History Founded in 1910 during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway main line, Tilley was incorporated as a village on May 9, 1940. It dissolved from village status on August 31, 2013 to become a hamlet under the jurisdiction of the County of Newell. Demographics In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Tilley had a population of 318 living in 132 of its 144 total private dwellings, a change of from its 2016 population of 364. Tilley is a small village to the south of and almost merged with Wem in North Shropshire. Population information at the 2011 census is shown under Wem Rural. A hamlet, Tilley Green, lies to its southeast at . The village or hamlet comprises around 20 dwellings and of these up to 10 are designated listed buildings including Tilley Manor, Tilley Farm and Brook Cottage; all three are timber-framed and have their origins in the Medieval and early Post Medieval periods; Tilley Farm and Manor are of the classic cross-wing vernacular and clearly very early in date, probably 13th/14th century. Despite the wealth of medieval and post-medieval timber-framed buildings, Tilley does not possess a church. However, it is probable that such a building may have existed somewhere within the centre of the village, probably close to the manor house. Tilley's Devine Café Gallery is a well-known café in the suburb of Lyneham in Canberra, Australia. It was named after Matilda 'Tilly' Devine, an English Australian gangster and madame from Sydney. When the café first opened in 1984, it was intended as a women's space, with men allowed entry only when accompanied by women. Popular with lesbian women, it quickly became an icon of Canberra's LGBT scene. Attempts to restrict or limit entry of men brought challenges, most notably by a group of cadets from the Royal Military College, Duntroon who attempted to force their way in, instigating a brawl. The policy was maintained for two years. Tilley's originally had seating for 60, but subsequently expanded five times, and now has large indoor and outdoor eating areas.
