Tigre Club
The Tigre Club stands on the banks of the Luján River, in ''Paseo Victorica'', Tigre, near Buenos Aires, Argentina. The club, built next to the Tigre Hotel (demolished in 1940), was financed by Ernesto Tornquist and was designed by the architects Pablo Pater, Luis Dubois and the engineer Emilio Mitre (son of the former President of Argentina, Bartolomé Mitre); it was opened on 13 January 1912. Like the hotel nearby opened in 1890, the Tigre Club soon became an important meeting place for the rich and famous. The elegant and luxurious building has two floors with mezzanines with large windows on almost all sides. The main saloon on the first floor has frescoes by the Spanish artist Julio Vila y Prades (1875-1930), the staircases are of marble and there are Venetian mirrors and French chandeliers. Bartolomé Mitre Martínez (26 June 1821 – 19 January 1906) was an Argentine statesman, soldier and author. He was President of Argentina from 1862 to 1868 and the first president of unified Argentina. This designation encourages greater protection under the oversight of the ''Comisión Nacional de Museos, Monumentos y Lugares Históricos'' (National Commission of Museums, Monuments and Historic Places), created in 1940. In addition, provinces also have local lists of historic monuments. There are approximately 400 buildings or sites on the list. Emilio Mitre (engineer)
Emilio Mitre (5 January 1824, Carmen de Patagones – 24 December 1893) was an Argentine Lieutenant General who participated in the Paraguayan War. He was the brother of Bartolomé Mitre and participated across the Uruguayan Civil War and the Argentine Civil Wars. Biography Mitre spent his childhood and youth in Montevideo, and enlisted in the Uruguayan Army in 1841 . He participated in the Battle of Arroyo Grande and retired with General Fructuoso Rivera to Montevideo. There he defended the city during the siege imposed by Manuel Oribe. He joined the Ejército Grande of Justo José de Urquiza at the end of 1851 and fought in the Battle of Caseros. Mitre then returned to Buenos Aires and participated in the Revolution of 11 September 1852 which divided the country between the Argentine Confederation and the State of Buenos Aires and defended the city during the siege imposed by Federal General Hilario Lagos.
