Tiger Jack Fox
John Linwood Fox (April 2, 1907 – April 6, 1954), or Tiger Jack Fox as he was better known, was a colorful, hard punching, American light heavyweight boxer. Fox fought from 1928 to 1950. Boxing career Fox claimed he got his start in boxing when he was picked up, while hitchhiking in Georgia, by boxer Young Stribling. At that time, Stribling was travelling from town to town and engaging in boxing matches, basically meeting all comers. Stribling offered Fox a job as a sparring partner. Although he had no experience, Fox, out of work and hungry, accepted the offer. His first sparring session with Stribling almost ended his boxing career. Stribling toyed with him, and eventually knocked him senseless with a right hand to the jaw. Seal Harris
Seal Harris (20 January 1906 – ?) was an African American heavyweight boxer who fought some of the top black boxers of the day and fought former colored heavyweight champion George Godfrey for the world colored heavyweight title vacated by Larry Gains. In the title bout held in Toronto, Canada's Arena Gardens on August 24, 1931, Godfrey prevailed by knocking out Harris at 1:35 in the second round. Harris also fought former World Heavyweight Champ Primo Carnera in 1935, seven months after Carnera lost his world title to Max Baer. In São Paulo, Brazil, Harris lost to the ex-champion in what ended up as his last fight. Born in Cecil Harris in Union Springs, Alabama on 20 January 1906, the 6′3½″ Harris fought at a weight of between 220 and 245 lbs. out of Chicago in a professional boxing career that spanned the years 1926 to 1935. The World Colored Heavyweight Championship was a title awarded to black boxers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This was the only recognized heavyweight championship available to black boxers prior to Jack Johnson winning the world heavyweight title in 1908. The title continued to exist until the reign of Joe Louis as universally recognized champ, as the color bar against black heavyweights was enforced during and for a generation after Jack Johnson's reign as world champ. George Godfrey (II) The Leiperville Shadow (January 25, 1897 – August 13, 1947) was the ring name of Feab Smith Williams, a heavyweight boxer from the state of Alabama who fought from 1919-1937. He named himself after George "Old Chocolate" Godfrey, a Black Canadian boxer from the bare-knuckle boxing days who had been a top name during the John L. Sullivan era. Old Chocolate had been the fourth fighter to reign as World Colored Heavyweight Champion while the second George Godfrey was the 20th fighter to hold the colored heavyweight title. Arthur Lakofsky (November 16, 1909 – April 2, 1980), also known as Art Lasky, was a heavyweight professional boxer from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Personal life Lasky was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on November 8, 1908, and called Minneapolis his home. He was of Russian-Jewish ancestry. Both he and his brother Maurice worked in a scrap metal yard before taking up boxing. His brothers Dave and Eli both had short, but less successful careers as boxers during the depression years of the 1930s. Lasky's brother Maurice acted as his trainer, and trained the boxer Young Harry Greb for a time. After his boxing career ended, Lasky went on to become a cameraman, stunt coordinator, and even dabbled in acting. Donald Barry de Acosta (January 11, 1912 – July 17, 1980), also known as Red Barry and Milton Poimboeuf, was an American film and television actor. He was nicknamed "Red" after appearing as the first Red Ryder in the highly successful 1940 film ''Adventures of Red Ryder'' with Noah Beery Sr.; the character was played in later films by "Wild Bill" Elliott and Allan Lane.
