Tiger is an unincorporated community in Pend Oreille County, Washington, United States. Named for early settler George Tiger, Tiger is located near Washington State Route 31 south of Ione. Tiger had its start in 1899 when George Tiger established a river landing there. Pend Oreille County ( ) is a county located in the northeast corner of the U.S. state of Washington, along the Canada–US border. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,401. The county seat and largest city is Newport. The county was created out of Stevens County on March 1, 1911. It is the most recently formed of the state's 39 counties. Area code 509 is the telephone area code for the eastern two-thirds of the state of Washington. The western boundary of 509 roughly follows the Cascades. The 509 area code includes Spokane, the Tri-Cities ( Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick), Ellensburg, Yakima, Walla Walla, and Wenatchee. The 509 code was created in a split from 206, originally the area code for all of Washington, in a flash-cut on January 1, 1957. This part of Washington is not as densely populated as the west, and the great majority of the state's landlines and cell phones are located west of the Cascades. As a result, while western Washington went from one area code to four during the 1990s, 509 has remained unchanged for over 60 years. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Washington State Route 31
State Route 31 (SR 31) is a Washington state highway located entirely in Pend Oreille County. The highway, which is long, starts at an intersection with in Tiger and travels north to the Canada–US border north of Metaline Falls. At the border, SR 31 becomes (BC 6). The route parallels the Pend Oreille River for most of its route and the primary functions of the highway is to serve and connect Tiger, Ione, Metaline and Metaline Falls with British Columbia. Before 1964, the route from Newport to BC 6 was the northernmost section of , which ran from Spokane to BC 6. Originally created in 1964, SR 31 extended southeast to an intersection with (US 2, formerly ) in Newport. Ione, Washington
Ione is a town in Pend Oreille County, Washington, United States. The population was 428 at the 2020 census. History Ione was first settled in 1894 by homesteader Elmer Hall. Ione was officially incorporated on January 3, 1910. The timber industry played a major role in Ione's history. In the early 1900's, Frederick A. Blackwell's Panhandle Lumber Company opened the inland northwest's first all-electric sawmill in Ione. The timber-based economy persisted for nearly 100 years in Ione, lasting until 1995 when the Vaagen Brothers' sawmill, the last major sawmill in the country, closed down. The railroad reached Ione in 1910 when Blackwell built the Idaho & Washington Northern Railroad, connecting Ione with Metaline Falls in the north and Newport in the south.
