Tigard ( ) is a city in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 48,035 at the 2010 census. As of 2007, Tigard was the state's 12th largest city. Incorporated in 1961, the city is located south of Beaverton and north of Tualatin, and is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Interstate 5 and Oregon Route 217 are the main freeways in the city, with Oregon Route 99W and Oregon Route 210 serving as other major highways. Public transit service is provided by TriMet, via several bus routes and the WES Commuter Rail line. History Before colonization by European settlers, the Atfalati inhabited the Tualatin Valley in several hunter-gatherer villages including Chachimahiyuk ("Place of aromatic herbs"), near present-day Tigard. Tigard Transit Center, formally Thomas M. Brian Tigard Transit Center, is a transport hub in Tigard, Oregon, United States, that is owned and operated by TriMet. It is a transfer facility for bus routes mainly serving the westside communities of the Portland metropolitan area and the third southbound station from Beaverton Transit Center on WES Commuter Rail. The transit center is the located in downtown Tigard just south of Oregon Route 99W (OR 99W) on Commercial Street. It recorded 1,627 average weekday boardings in fall 2019. The facility opened in 1988 as a bus transit center, and a platform for WES was added in 2009. The Tigard-Tualatin School District (23J) is a school district serving part of the suburban Portland metropolitan area in Oregon including all or portions of the cities of Tigard, Tualatin, Durham, and King City, as well as most of the unincorporated communities of Metzger, Oregon, Metzger and Bull Mountain, Oregon, Bull Mountain. History Tigard Elementary School District 23 was established in 1875, while the Tualatin district was started as the Bridgeport district (26J). These districts later merged, as did the Tigard high school district (2J) and the Tualatin high school district (26J). Tigard Public Library
Tigard Public Library is the library within Washington County Cooperative Library Services serving Tigard in the U.S. state of Oregon. Established in 1963, the current building opened in 2004 on Hall Boulevard. As of 2012, Margaret Barnes was the director of the library that had a collection of about 230,000 items making 1.5 million loans of those items. History In 1963, the Tigard Junior Women's Club lobbied the city council to start a library in the city that incorporated a few years prior in 1961. The city agreed to establish a library, but did not fund the project. The next year, the Tigard Library opened in downtown on Main Street at the former city hall, but it was operated by volunteers with an initial collection of 1,011 books, most of which had been donated during a door-to-door campaign. Tigard High School
Tigard High School is a public high school located in Tigard, Oregon, United States. It is one of two high schools in the Tigard-Tualatin School District and educated students in grades 9–12. History Tigard High School originally was in a different location from recent times. The school first opened in 1927. It occupied the site of the first Tigard school which occupied a log building from 1853 near downtown Tigard. The current Tigard High School building opened in 1953. The school was remodeled in 2004, mostly on the east side of the school. In November 2016, voters approved Measure 34-248, which provided $291,315,000 for the school district. $62 million of that funding went to build new Tigard High buildings and repair existing ones. A new second-story wing has been added and the commons expanded. After completion, the commons will be the only place to eat lunch.
