Tifton, Thomasville And Gulf Railway
The Tifton, Thomasville and Gulf Railway (TT&G) was a railway that operated from Tifton, Georgia southwest to Thomasville, Georgia in the early 1900s. It later became part of the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railway and Atlantic Coast Line Railroad networks. History The Tifton, Thomasville and Gulf Railway was chartered on June 26, 1897 by business interests in Tifton. It was built from Tifton to Thomasville in 1900. In Tifton, it connected with the Tifton and Northeastern Railroad, which ran northeast to Fitzgerald, Georgia. Both the TT&G and the Tifton and Northeastern Railroad were acquired by the Waycross Air Line Railroad, Atlantic and Birmingham Railroad on December 3, 1903, which was renamed the Atlantic and Birmingham Railway (A&B). This gave the Atlantic and Birmingham a continuous branch line, known as the Thomasville Branch, from Fitzgerald (where it connected to the rest of the A&B network) to Thomasville. Chessie System
Chessie System, Inc. was a holding company that owned the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O), the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), the Western Maryland Railway (WM), and Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad (B&OCT). Trains operated under the Chessie name from 1973 to 1987. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the Chessie System was the creation of Cyrus S. Eaton and his protégé Hays T. Watkins, then president and chief executive officer of the C&O. A chief source of revenue for the Chessie System was coal mined in West Virginia. Another was the transport of auto parts and finished motor vehicles. The name "Chessie System" had been a popular nickname for the C&O since the 1930s, cemented with an advertising campaign that featured a sleeping kitten named Chessie. Georgia Southern And Florida Railway
The Georgia Southern and Florida Railway , also known as the ''Suwanee River Route'' from its crossing of the Suwanee River, was founded in 1885 as the Georgia Southern and Florida ''Railroad'' and began operations between Macon, GA and Valdosta, GA in 1889, extending to Palatka, FL in 1890. The railroad went bankrupt by 1891, was reorganized as the Georgia Southern and Florida ''Railway'' in 1895, and was controlled by the Southern Railway. In 1902, the GS&F purchased the Atlantic, Valdosta and Western Railway that ran from Valdosta, GA to Jacksonville, FL. The GS&F also owned the Macon and Birmingham Railway and the Hawkinsville and Florida Southern Railway, both of which were operated as separate companies; both ended up going bankrupt and being mostly abandoned. The GS&F was eventually acquired by the Norfolk Southern Railway and still operates as a subsidiary. Plant System
The Plant System named after its owner, Henry B. Plant, was a system of railroads and steamboats in the U.S. South, taken over by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902. The original line of the system was the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway, running across southern Georgia. The Plant Investment Company was formed in 1882 to lease and buy other railroads and expand the system. Other major lines incorporated into the system include the Savannah and Charleston Railroad and the Brunswick and Western Railroad. The Brunswick and Western Railroad (known earlier as the Brunswick and Florida Railroad and the Brunswick and Albany Railroad) is a historic railroad in southern Georgia that at its greatest extent ran from Brunswick near the coast to Albany. Georgia Northern Railway
The Boston and Albany Railroad was chartered in 1891 to build a rail line from Boston to Albany, Georgia, United States. After two years, very little progress had been made and the railroad was purchased by the Pidcock Family who had founded a private logging railroad in the early 1890s that ran north from Pidcock, Georgia. The Pidcocks combined their assets into the Georgia Northern Railway. The railroad was operating between Albany and Boston by 1905. They then began purchasing other railroads. It bought the Flint River and Northeastern Railroad in 1910, the Georgia, Ashburn, Sylvester and Camilla Railway in 1922, and the Georgia Southwestern and Gulf Railroad in 1939. The coterie of roads became known as the Pidcock Kingdom shortlines in Sowega.
