''Tiempos de dictadura'' (') is a 2012 Venezuelan documentary film written and directed by , narrated by humorist and politologist Laureano Márquez. The film focuses on the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez. Plot The documentary narrates the period of the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez, from the 1948 coup d'état against President Rómulo Gallegos and the human rights violations committed by the Seguridad Nacional secret police (including censorship, arrests, torture and extrajudicial killings) to the public works and lavish carnivals promoted by the oil boom. Release The film was screened in Venezuela on 7 September 2012. Oteyza declared that he was aiming to screen the documentary on 23 January, the anniversary when Pérez Jiménez was overthrown, but it was not possible due to the production time. Laureano Márquez
Laureano Márquez (4 July 1963 in Canary Islands), is a Spanish-born Venezuelan humorist and politologist. Biography Marquez was born on the Spanish island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, in 1963 and obtained a BA in Political Science from the Central University of Venezuela. As an actor, he has played leading roles on radio and television, such as in '' Radio Rochela'', ''Humor a Primera Vista'', and ''Que Broma Tan Seria'', and has written and performed in several plays, including ''La Reconstituyente'', ''El Pantaletazo'', and ''Laureamor y Emidilio''. ''El pueblo soy yo'' ( en, I am the people), also known as ''El Pueblo Soy Yo: Venezuela en Populismo'', is a 2018 documentary film directed by Venezuelan filmmaker and produced by Mexican historian Enrique Krauze. Marcos Pérez Jiménez
Marcos Evangelista Pérez Jiménez (25 April 1914 – 20 September 2001) was a Venezuelan military and general officer of the Army of Venezuela and the dictator of Venezuela from 1950 to 1958, ruling as member of the military junta from 1950 to 1952 and as president from 1952 to 1958. He took part in the 1948 coup d'état, becoming part of the ruling junta. He ran in the 1952 election. However, the junta cancelled the election when early results indicated that the opposition was ahead, and declared Jiménez provisional president. He became president in 1953 and instituted a constitution that granted him dictatorial powers. Under Pérez's rule, the rise of oil prices facilitated many public works projects, including roads, bridges, government buildings and public housing, as well as the rapid development of industries such as hydroelectricity, mining, and steel. The 1958 Venezuelan coup d'état took place on 23 January 1958, when the dictator Marcos Pérez Jiménez was overthrown. A transition government under first Adm. Wolfgang Larrazábal and then Edgar Sanabria was put in place until December 1958 elections saw Democratic Action candidate Rómulo Betancourt elected and take office on 13 February 1959.
