Tianjin (; ; Mandarin: ), alternately romanized as Tientsin (), is a municipality and a coastal metropolis in Northern China on the shore of the Bohai Sea. It is one of the nine national central cities in Mainland China, with a total population of 13,866,009 inhabitants during the 2020 Chinese census. Its built-up (''or metro'') area, made up of 12 central districts (all but Baodi, Jizhou, Jinghai and Ninghe), was home to 11,165,706 inhabitants and is also the world's 29th-largest agglomeration (between Chengdu and Rio de Janeiro) and 11th- most populous city proper. It is governed as one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of Chinese central government and is thus under direct administration of the State Council. A direct-administrated municipality (), commonly known as municipality, is the highest level of classification for cities used by the People's Republic of China. These cities have the same rank as provinces and form part of the first tier of administrative divisions of China. A municipality is a "city" () with "provincial" () power under a unified jurisdiction. As such, it is simultaneously a city and a province in its own right. Zhang Gong (politician)
Zhang Gong (; born August 1961) is a Chinese politician who is the current mayor of Tianjin, in office since 31 May 2022. Previously he served as director of the State Administration for Market Regulation. He was a delegate to the 11th and is a delegate to the 13th National People's Congress. He was an alternate member of the 19th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. Early life and education Zhang was born in Beijing, in August 1961. After resuming the college entrance examination in 1979, he was accepted to Beijing University of Technology, majoring in electrical machines. After graduating in 1983, he was assigned to Beijing Electric Appliance Research Institute, where he moved up the ranks to become deputy director in May 1993 and director in February 1994.
