Thunderhill Ski Area
Thunderhill Ski Area is a ski area located in the Swan River Valley region of Manitoba. It is approximately 25 kilometers southwest of the town of Swan River. The summit lies exactly on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan boundary. Its vertical drop is currently the largest in Manitoba. Thunderhill, on which the ski area is located, is a feature of the Manitoba Escarpment. The ski area has two sections - upper mountain west and lower mountain east. Each section is served by a T-Bar lift. The ski area's longest runs are about one kilometre, and are also some of the longest in the province. Typically, the area operates each winter from mid-December to mid-March. History The ski area first opened in 1967 and was run by the Benito Elks club until 1972. The original lift used was a rope tow which also happened to be the longest lift of its kind in the province of Manitoba. Rural Municipality Of Swan River
The Rural Municipality of Swan River is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on May 1, 1901. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the Village of Benito to form the Municipality of Swan Valley West. The former RM is located in the Parkland Region of the province, adjacent to the Province of Saskatchewan, and surrounds the Town of Swan River. It had a population of 2,784 in the 2006 census. The southernmost part of Manitoba's Porcupine Provincial Forest is located within the northern portion of the former RM. Doppelmayr USA, Inc is an aerial lift manufacturer based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and a subsidiary of the worldwide Doppelmayr Garaventa Group. The United States company was formed in 2002 after the merger of Garaventa of Goldau, Switzerland, and Doppelmayr of Wolfurt, Austria. Between 2002 and 2010, the company was named Doppelmayr CTEC. Duck Mountain Ski Area is a ski area located in Saskatchewan's Duck Mountain Provincial Park approximately 2.5 kilometres from the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. It is 36 km from Kamsack and 116 km from Yorkton. The Duck Mountains, the area where the hill is located, are a feature of the Manitoba Escarpment. Thunderhill Ski Area, 50 km to the north is another ski hill located along the Manitoba Escarpment. The operating season for Duck Mountain Ski Area varies depending on weather and snow conditions, but the hill typically is open from late December to mid-March every year. Benito is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Swan Valley West, Manitoba, Canada. Prior to 1 January 2015, Benito was designated as a village. The community is situated in the Swan River Valley, southwest of Swan River, northwest of Winnipeg, and east of the Saskatchewan border.
