Thunder Of Silence
"Thunder of Silence" is an episode of the 1959 Australian TV drama anthology ''Shell Presents'', and the fourth made in Sydney. It was based on an American play by Stewart Stern which had been produced in the U.S. with Paul Newman and Inger Stevens. It aired live on 22 August 1959 in Sydney with a recorded version airing on 28 November 1959 in Melbourne. It was a drama of immigrant assimilation. John Meillon played the lead. Australian TV drama was relatively rare at the time. Plot In the American mid-west, a middle aged farmer (John Tate) and his wife (Marion Johns) give shelter to a refugee from Europe (Richard Davies) and his daughter (Marion Johns). The refugee and the farmer have very different personalities and struggle to understand each other. The situation is resolved by the return of Everett (John Meillon), the farming couple's wandering son. Shell Presents
''Shell Presents'' was an early attempt at Australian television drama, being an umbrella title for several different productions. It debuted on 4 April 1959, and aired on ATN-7 and GTV-9, who split production of plays for the series between them. It was an anthology series, each program being a self-contained play for television. The series won a Logie award in 1960 for ''TV Highlight of 1959''. As the title suggests, it was sponsored by Shell. It was described as "a very big deal for the station: major institutional sponsorship from international companies for locally produced drama." It would be followed by ''The General Motors Hour''. Though it usually presented straight drama, it also presented a live musical production titled ''Pardon Miss Westcott'', set in colonial-era Australia. John Meillon
John Meillon, ( ; 1 May 1934 – 11 August 1989), was an Australian character actor, known for many straight as well as comedy roles, he became most widely known internationally as Walter Reilly in the films ''Crocodile Dundee'' and ''Crocodile Dundee II''. He also voiced advertisements for Victoria Bitter beer. He appeared in several Australian New Wave films including ''Wake in Fright'' and ''The Cars That Ate Paris''. Biography Meillon was born in Mosman, New South Wales. His younger brother was director Bob Meillon (1943–2012). Meillon began his acting career at the age of eleven in the ABC's radio serial ''Stumpy'', and made his first stage appearance the following year. "A Tongue of Silver" is an episode of the 1959 Australian TV drama anthology ''Shell Presents''. Australian TV drama was relatively rare at the time. It starred John Meillon, who had been in ''Thunder of Silence'' in the same series. It aired on 17 October 1959 in Sydney, and on 20 February 1960 in Melbourne. It was the first play from ''Shell Presents'' to be telecast in Western Australia, and was broadcast there in 17 October 1959. It was repeated on 22 May 1960. Plot A stranger arrives in an Irish village during a thunderstorm. They are convinced he is an emissary from Heaven. ''The Biz'' was a weekly English language tabloid newspaper published in Fairfield, New South Wales Australia. The paper was first published in 1917 by Albert Henry Johnson. For forty years the publishing house was located in Cabramatta, New South Wales, before being moved to Smart Street, Fairfield. It ceased publication in January 1980. Inger Stevens (born Ingrid Stensland; October 18, 1934 – April 30, 1970) was a Swedish-American film, stage and Golden Globe-winning television actress. Early life Inger Stevens was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the eldest child of Per Gustaf and Lisbet Stensland. When she was six years old, her mother abandoned the family, taking her youngest son Peter with her. Soon after, Stevens' father moved to the United States, leaving Stevens and her brother Ola in the custody of the family maid and then later with an aunt in Lidingö, near Stockholm.
