Threshold (1981 Film)
''Threshold'' is a 1981 Canadian drama/science fiction film directed by Richard Pearce and starring Donald Sutherland and Jeff Goldblum. The film was nominated for ten Genie Awards in 1983 and won two of them. Sutherland also won best actor at the 1982 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for his performance. ''Threshold'' was filmed on location at the then newly constructed Ottawa General Hospital. Plot Respected cardiac surgeon Dr. Thomas Vrain performs a risky operation to provide a patient with the first artificial heart ever implanted in a human subject. He and his colleague, research scientist Dr. Aldo Gehring, consider the risks and weigh the odds as time runs out for Carol Severance, the patient. Severance will die unless the experimental surgery is done quickly and succeeds. Richard Pearce (born January 25, 1943) is an American film director, television director and cinematographer. In addition to feature films, he has directed made-for-TV movies and TV series. Early life and education Born in 1943 in San Diego, California, Richard Pearce went east to high school, attending St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. He attended Yale University, where he earned a B.A., English in 1965 where he met D.A. Pennebaker; afterwards he moved to New York City working with Pennebaker and Richard Leacock on several documentaries. The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival ( cs, Mezinárodní filmový festival Karlovy Vary) is a film festival held annually in July in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The Karlovy Vary Festival is one of the oldest in the world and has become Central and Eastern Europe's leading film event. History The pre-war dream of many enthusiastic filmmakers materialized in 1946 when a non-competition festival of films from seven countries took place in Mariánské Lázně and Karlovy Vary. Allan F. Nicholls (born April 8, 1945) is a Canadian actor, film director, film producer, screenwriter, composer and musician. He was nominated for both a BAFTA and WGA award for his writing on the 1978 film '' A Wedding''. He is often credited as Allan Nicholls. Allan was lead vocalist in the mid-60s with recording acts J.B. & The Playboys (RCA), who later became The Jaybees (on RCA) then Carnival Connection (Capitol).
