''Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra'' is an avant-garde music, avant-garde musical composition written by William Russo (musician), William Russo in 1968. It combines classical music played by an orchestra with blues played by a four-piece band. ''Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra'' was recorded in 1972 by the San Francisco Symphony and the Siegel–Schwall Band, conducted by Seiji Ozawa. When the album was released the following year by Deutsche Grammophon, it became one of the company's best selling records, reaching number 21 on the Billboard charts, ''Billboard'' Jazz Chart and number 105 on the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200. Side two of the original LP record was ''West Side Story, Symphonic Dances from West Side Story'' by Leonard Bernstein. Siegel–Schwall Band
The Siegel–Schwall Band was an American electric blues band from Chicago, Illinois. The band was formed in 1964 by Corky Siegel (piano, electric piano, harmonica, vocals) and Jim Schwall (guitar, mandolin, vocals). They played many live shows, and released ten albums. They disbanded in 1974. The Siegel-Schwall Band performed occasional concerts, and released two more albums, from 1987 to 2016. Siegel, originally a saxophonist, was interested in blues, while Schwall's background was mostly in country music. Jim Schwall (November 12, 1942 – June 19, 2022) was an American musician, singer-songwriter, and photographer. He was best known as a co-founder and member of the Siegel-Schwall Band. Musical career Jim Schwall was born in Evanston, Illinois. A singer-songwriter, he played guitar, as well as mandolin, bass guitar, accordion, and other instruments.
