Hal Rogers Parkway
The Hal Rogers Parkway, formerly named the Daniel Boone Parkway, connects Somerset and Hazard in southeastern Kentucky. This toll road opened in November 1971, and the tolls were removed June 1, 2003. The original extent of the highway was to be with that mileage to have been included with an unconstructed limited-access London bypass and what is east of this area. Sonny Osborne
Sonny Osborne (October 29, 1937October 24, 2021) was an American bluegrass musician and founding member of the Osborne Brothers. Personal life Born on October 29, 1937 in Thousandsticks, Kentucky, Sonny Osborne's father was a farmer, teacher, and amateur banjo, guitar, and fiddle player. His older brother Bobby began playing bluegrass music after the family moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1941. Circa August 2021, when Osborne suffered a stroke, he was married to his wife, Judy. He died at around 1:30p.m. at home in Hendersonville, Tennessee on October 24, 2021. Career Osborne was a baritone singer who played multiple types of banjos over his 53-year musical career. Bobby Osborne
Bobby Osborne (born December 7, 1931) is an American bluegrass musician. He is the co-founder (with his brother Sonny Osborne) of the Osborne Brothers and a member of the Grand Ole Opry and the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. He also teaches at thKentucky School of Bluegrass and Traditional Musicin Hyden, Kentucky. Osborne's primary instrument is the mandolin. Early life Osborne was born in Thousandsticks in Leslie County, Kentucky. When he was growing up he helped his father and grandfather at the older man's general store. At the same time he was attracted to the music of the Grand Ole Opry and eventually dropped out of high school to form a band with his brother, Sonny. He helped develop the vocal trio concept in bluegrass music by putting the melody in the tenor voice, instead of putting it in one of the lower voice registers. Hyden, Kentucky
Hyden is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Leslie County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 365 at the 2010 census. It is located at the junction of U.S. Route 421 and Kentucky Route 80, along the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River. History The area was first settled around 1800 by the Sizemores, a mixed-blood (Anglo and Native-American) family migrating from North Carolina, with a brief stay in Hawkins County, Tennessee, before making it to Kentucky. John "Rock House" Sizemore and his wife, Nancy (Bowling) Sizemore, lived in a rock house about a hundred yards up from the mouth of the creek which would later bear his name (Rockhouse Creek). John Rock House later sold the land to a Lewis man who then donated the land to the government, which became the town of Hyden. Kentucky Route 118 (KY 118), also known as the Hyden Spur and the Tim Couch Pass, is a 3.524 mile (5.671 km) long state highway in southeastern Kentucky, running entirely in Leslie County. The route originates at exit 44 of the Hal Rogers Parkway near the unincorporated community of Thousandsticks, and connects with US 421 in the county seat of Hyden. Route description The road, a modern two-lane road with an extra climbing lane where necessary, was originally the Hyden Spur of the Daniel Boone Parkway (now the Hal Rogers Parkway). Shortly after exiting the parkway, the road climbs a large hill for roughly a mile (1.6 km). The last mile into Hyden is a 7% downhill grade, with a runaway truck ramp near its end at US 421. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
