Thorstein H. H. Thoresen
Thorstein Hartvig Haugen Thoresen (December 9, 1885 – April 17, 1956) was a Norwegian-American lawyer and politician in the state of North Dakota. He served as the 18th Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota from 1937 to 1939 under Governor William Langer. Thoresen was born in Horten, Norway in 1885, the son of Thor and Maren Sibile Thoresen. He previously practiced law in Dunn Center, North Dakota where he also served as state attorney of Dunn County. In 1924, he was an unsuccessful candidate for Attorney General of North Dakota, and in 1928 an unsuccessful candidate for Governor, losing both times to George F. Shafer. Thoresen served as the North Dakota Tax Commissioner from 1925 to July 1929; upon his retirement he established a law practice at Grand Forks, North Dakota. The lieutenant governor of North Dakota is a political office in North Dakota. The lieutenant governor's duty is to preside as President of the Senate, and is responsible for legislative relations, the state budget and agribusiness development. In the event the office of the governor becomes vacant, the lieutenant governor assumes that office and appoints a replacement lieutenant. The current lieutenant governor is Brent Sanford, having been elected and re-elected with Governor Doug Burgum. Before 1974, the lieutenant governor of North Dakota was elected separately from the governor. Dunn County, North Dakota
Dunn County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,095. Its county seat is Manning. History On March 9, 1883, the Dakota Territory legislature authorized the creation of a new county, using territory partitioned from Howard County (which is now extinct). The county organization was not effected at that time, but the county was not attached to another county for judicial purposes. The county boundaries were altered in 1883, and on November 3, 1896, the legislature ordered Dunn dissolved, with its territory assigned to Stark County. However, the state supreme court overturned the legislature's act on May 24, 1901; in effect re-creating Dunn County. The county was still not assigned to another county. This was resolved on March 10, 1903, when the county was assigned to Stark County for judicial purposes. William Langer
William "Wild Bill" Langer (September 30, 1886November 8, 1959) was a prominent American lawyer and politician from North Dakota, where he was an infamous character, bouncing back from a scandal that forced him out of the governor's office and into multiple trials. He was the 17th and 21st governor of North Dakota from 1932 to 1934 and from 1937 to 1939. Langer was elected to the United States Senate in 1940, remaining until he died in office in 1959. There he strongly opposed any American military involvement in world affairs, and his opponents derided him as an isolationist.
