Thordarson Estate Historic District
The Thordarson Estate Historic District is located on Rock Island State Park on Rock Island in the town of Washington, Wisconsin. History The district is made up of the estate of Icelandic inventor Chester Thordarson. A number of the buildings were designed by Frederick Dinkelberg. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and on the State Register of Historic Places in 1989. Washington Island is a town in northern Door County, Wisconsin, United States, with a population of 708 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated communities of Detroit Harbor and Washington are located in the town. The town of Washington Island is made up of a group of small islands that includes Plum Island, Detroit Island, Hog Island, Rock Island, Pilot Island, Fish Island, and the largest, Washington Island. The majority of the population of the town lives on Washington Island and many of the other smaller islands are partly or entirely protected areas with no year-round population, if any at all. As a result, the area is rarely if ever referred to as the town of Washington or just Washington; more commonly the names of the individual islands are used as a reference. Chester Thordarson
Chester Hjortur Thordarson (May 12, 1867 – January 6, 1945) — born Hjörtur Þórðarson — was an Icelandic-American inventor and manufacturer of electrical apparatus who eventually held nearly a hundred technology patents related to transformers, inductors, high voltage coils, and more. Biography Thordarson immigrated to the United States from Iceland in 1873 with his parents Gudrun Grimsdotter and Thordur Arnason. In 1887, Thordarson took a job in Chicago, Illinois working for Chicago Edison Co. In 1895, he founded the Thordarson Electric Manufacturing Company, a manufacturing company in Chicago that produced industrial and commercial transformers. Thordarson's company is now called Thordarson Meissner, Inc. and has locations in Mount Carmel, Illinois, and Henderson, Nevada. Frederick Dinkelberg
Frederick Philip Dinkelberg (June 30, 1858 – February 10, 1935) was an American architect best known for being Daniel Burnham's associate for the design of the Flatiron Building in New York City. Other important projects he worked on include, Chicago's Railway Exchange and the Jewelers' Building, and Philadelphia and New York's Wanamaker's Department Stores. Life and career Dinkelberg was born on June 30, 1858, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to Maria Imer (1832–1872), who was supposedly an Italian Countess, and well-to-do contractor Philip Dinkelberg (1832–1886) who was born at Ramsen in Rheinland-Pfalz. Frederick grew up in privileged surroundings, and studied architecture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1881, he began his career as a practicing architect in New York City, where he would remain for 10 years.
