Thor Kunkel
Thor Kunkel, a German author, was born in Frankfurt am Main on 2 September 1963. Kunkel claims to have spent his youth associating with drug friends and American soldiers stationed in the then West Germany. In 1981, on a scholarship to the United States, he enrolled in the creative writing programme of the San Francisco Art Institute. Following his return to West Germany, Kunkel joined the staff of advertising agency Young & Rubicam, then in 1988 joined the Swiss GGK in London, England. After marrying Dutch artist Gerda Bakker, he moved to Amsterdam in 1992 and re-joined Young & Rubicam as creative director, quitting in 1996 to take up directing and writing. He now lives in Switzerland and the Netherlands. His first novel, ''The Blacklight-Terrarium'' (1999), won him a major German literary prize. Volker Weidermann
Volker Weidermann (born 1969) is a German writer and literary critic. He currently works for ''Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung'' as the literary director and editor of the newspaper's Sunday edition. In 2015, he changed to Der Spiegel. Life Weidermann studied political science along with German language and linguistics at Heidelberg and Berlin. For many years he wrote as a Literary critic for the Berlin-based Tageszeitung, where he was employed as editor between 1998 and 2001. He then switched to the "Literary directorship" of the then newly established Sunday edition of the venerable Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Robert Schindel
Robert Schindel (born 4 April 1944) is an Austrian lyricist, director and author. Life and career Robert Schindel was born on 4 April 1944 in Bad Hall, Upper Austria to Jewish communist parents. From 1950 to 1954, he attended elementary school and then the Bundesrealgymnasium in Vienna. In 1959, Robert Schindel left the Gymnasium; he was "''entlassen wegen schlechter Führung''" ("dismissed because of poor leadership") and began an apprenticeship as a bookseller at Globus-Verlag in Vienna, which he broke off. This was followed by trips to Paris and Sweden, where he made his way as a dishwasher among other things. According to his own statement, he was a member of the Communist Party of Austria from 1961 to 1967. ''Endstufe'' ("final stage) is a 2004 novel by the German writer Thor Kunkel. Set in a hedonistic version of the Third Reich, it follows a biologist who works for the SS where he oversees the secret production of pornographic films. Themes According to Kunkel, his intention with the novel was to "penetrate the private" and "use pornography as a poetic metaphor to fully grasp the phenomenon of the Third Reich". Reception The novel immediately became controversial in Germany, when the publisher Rowohlt Verlag cancelled its contract with Kunkel two months before the scheduled release. The editor Alexander Fest motivated this by accusing Kunkel of "self-indulgent amoralism". After the book had been published by Eichborn Verlag, it created a debate in German newspapers.
