Thonburi-class Coastal Defence Ship
The ''Thonburi'' class was a class of coastal defence ships of the Royal Thai Navy. It consisted of two ships built by Kawasaki and delivered in 1938, HTMS ''Thonburi'' and HTMS ''Sri Ayudhya''. Design ''Thonburi'' and her sister ship, ''Sri Ayudhya'', were designed following the incorporation of the earlier s into the Siamese Navy in the 1920s. The ''Ratanakosindra'' class were British-built ships which featured six-inch guns in two turrets and light armor. Under Plaek Pibulsonggram's command, the Siamese Navy began a series of modernization efforts. Priorities for the navy consisted of protecting the extensive Thai coastline, and coastal gunboats were viewed as the best resource. Several foreign firms from European countries offered a variety of designs, but in the end the Japanese company Kawasaki won the tender. Rattanakosindra-class Gunboat
The ''Rattanakosindra'' class ( th, เรือปืนชั้นรัตนโกสินทร์) were a pair of ocean-going armoured gunboats built in the United Kingdom and operated by the Royal Thai Navy. Design and development The original order for the ''Rattanakosindra'' class armoured gunboats was placed in 1914 by the Kingdom of Siam. The original design for two ships, armed with four guns, four guns. The ships would powered by Vertical Triple Expansion engines and coal fired boilers. Armstrong Whitworth in High Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne was awarded the contract and the first ship was laid down 1914 in Yard 872 while Hawthorn Leslie was subcontracted to build the engines and boilers. Manhattan Rebellion
The Manhattan Rebellion ( th, กบฏแมนฮัตตัน) was a failed coup attempt by officers of the Royal Thai Navy against the government of Prime Minister Plaek Pibulsonggram (Phibun) on 29–30 June 1951. They took the prime minister hostage during a handover ceremony for the US dredge ''Manhattan'' and brought him aboard the Navy's flagship HTMS ''Sri Ayudhya''. However, they were met by the combined forces of the Royal Thai Army, Air Force and Police. Heavy fighting ensued, and ''Sri Ayudhya'' was sunk despite Phibun's presence on board; the prime minister had to swim ashore along with the ship's crew. The event led to the Navy being stripped of most of its power and influence. It also showed that political power actually lay with commanders of the Armed Forces rather than the prime minister. The Battle of Ko Chang took place on 17 January 1941 during the Franco-Thai War in which a flotilla of French warships attacked a smaller force of Thai vessels, including a coastal defence ship. The battle resulted in a tactical victory by the French Navy over the Royal Thai Navy although the strategic result is disputed. The Japanese intervened diplomatically and mediated a ceasefire. In the end, two Thai ships were sunk and one was heavily damaged. Within a month of the engagement, the French and the Thais negotiated a peace which ended the war. Background Situation The Franco-Thai War was going quite poorly for the French land forces, who were ill-equipped to deal with the larger Thai Army. The French Governor General of Indochina and Commander-in-Chief Naval Forces, Admiral Jean Decoux, decided Indochina's best chance at stopping the incursions would be attempt a naval attack on the Thailand's fleet and coastal cities. Etna-class Cruiser (1941)
The ''Etna'' class were two cruisers originally ordered in Italy for the Thai Navy in 1938 and subsequently requisitioned for service by the Italian Navy on the outbreak of World War II, neither ship was completed and the damaged hulls were scrapped after the war. Design The Thai government ordered two light cruisers from CRDA, Trieste in 1938. The ships were to displace 5,500 tons and be armed with six guns in three twin turrets.
