Thomas Yeo
Thomas Yeo (born 22 April 1936) is a Singaporean artist. His first solo exhibition came in 1960 at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In 1984 he was awarded the Cultural Medallion. Personal life Yeo is born to an optician father and housewife mother, and has 12 siblings. One of his brothers is former Cabinet minister Yeo Cheow Tong who served in the Cabinet from 1990 to 2006. Career He enrolled in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1958 to 1960, where he studied with the artists Georgette Chen and Cheong Soo Pieng. From 1960 to 1964, he trained at the Chelsea School of Art and the Hammersmith College of Art & Architecture in London. His earliest solo show outside Singapore was at the Cathay Gallery in 1963. Yeo Cheow Tong
Yeo Cheow Tong (; born 22 June 1947) is a former Singaporean politician. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he served in the Cabinet from 1990 to 2006, and was a Member of Parliament (MP) of Hong Kah SMC from 12 December 1984 to 17 August 1988 and MP of Hong Kah GRC from 24 August 1988 to 19 April 2011 for almost 27 years. Early life Yeo was educated at Anglo-Chinese School, before receiving a Colombo Plan Scholarship in 1967 to study at the University of Western Australia, where he received a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) degree. Career He worked for Singapore's Economic Development Board (EDB) from 1972 to 1975, before entering the private sector. He entered politics in 1984. The Cultural Medallion is a cultural award in Singapore conferred to those who have achieved artistic excellence in dance, theatre, literature, music, photography, art and film. It is widely recognized as Singapore's pinnacle arts award. History The award was instituted in March 1979 by Minister for Culture Ong Teng Cheong and administered by the National Arts Council. The awards was given by the Minister for Culture. Since 2006, the award was presented by the President of Singapore instead of the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts (previously known as Minister for Culture). Georgette Chen
Georgette Liying Chendana Chen (; Born Chang Li Ying; 23 October 1906 – 15 March 1993), most commonly known as Georgette Chen, was a Singaporean painter and one of the pioneers of Modernism, modern Visual art of Singapore, Singaporean art as well as the Nanyang Style, Nanyang style of art in the region. A key figure in the development of modern art in Singapore, Chen is known for her oil paintings and contributions to Visual arts education, art education as a teacher at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) from 1954 to 1981. Prior to being based in Federation of Malaya, Malaya and Singapore from the 1950s onwards, Chen often travelled between cities such as Shanghai, Paris, New York City, New York and Tokyo. Cheong Soo Pieng
Cheong Soo Pieng () was a Singaporean artist who was a pioneer of the Nanyang art style, and a driving force to the development of Modernism in visual art in the early 20th-century Singapore. He was also known for his signature depiction of Southeast Asian indigenous tribal people with elongated limbs and torso, almond-shaped faces and eyes in his paintings. Early life Cheong was born the youngest of seven children in Amoy, China. His parents were neutral to his choice of education, when Cheong took to studying art at the Xiamen Academy of Fine Art in 1933. In 1936 Cheong graduated and attended Xinhua Academy of Fine Art in Shanghai for further studies, only to have his education cut short with the breakout of the Sino-Japanese War and the school destroyed by Japanese invaders in 1938. The National Arts Council (NAC) is a statutory board established on 15 October 1991 to oversee the development of arts in Singapore. It is under the purview of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.
