Thomas Woodcock (officer Of Arms)
Sir Thomas Woodcock Hon FRHSC (born 20 May 1951) is the senior herald and genealogist at the College of Arms in London. He is a former Garter Principal King of Arms and a former member of the Royal Household. Early life Woodcock was educated at Eton College before going up to University College, Durham, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then pursued further studies at Darwin College, Cambridge, becoming LLB. He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple. Career Woodcock began his heraldic career in 1975 as a research assistant to Sir Anthony Wagner, Garter King of Arms. In 1978 he was appointed Rouge Croix Pursuivant. In 1982 he was promoted to Somerset Herald, becoming Norroy and Ulster in 1997, then Garter Principal King of Arms on 1 April 2010. Norroy And Ulster King Of Arms
Norroy and Ulster King of Arms is the Provincial King of Arms at the College of Heralds with jurisdiction over England north of the River Trent, Trent and Northern Ireland. The two offices of Norroy and Ulster were formerly separate. Norroy King of Arms is the older office, there being a reference as early as 1276 to a "King of Heralds beyond the Trent in the North". The name ''wikt:Norroy, Norroy'' is derived from the French meaning 'north king'. The office of Ulster Principal King of Arms for All-Ireland was established in 1552 by King Edward VI to replace the older post of Ireland King of Arms, which had lapsed in 1487. Bachelor of Laws ( la, Legum Baccalaureus; LL.B.) is an undergraduate law degree in the United Kingdom and most common law jurisdictions. Windsor Herald
Windsor Herald of Arms in Ordinary is an officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. It has been suggested that the office was instituted specifically for the Order of the Garter in 1348, or that it predates the Order and was in use as early as 1338. However, it is more likely that it dates from 1364, when a pursuivant of Edward III, on bringing the king news of the victory at Auray, was rewarded by promotion to the rank of herald with the title Windsor. Thereafter there is little mention of the office before 1419, when Windsor Herald was sent to the Duke of Brittany. Since that time, the office has been maintained. The badge of office is the sunburst badge of Edward III (Edward of Windsor) royally crowned. The best-known Windsor Herald was the 17th-century antiquarian, Elias Ashmole. William George Hunt TD FCA (born 8 December 1946) served as Windsor Herald of Arms in Ordinary at the College of Arms in London from 1999 to 2017. Life Hunt worked for many years as a City chartered accountant before being appointed as Portcullis Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary in 1992. He was promoted as Windsor Herald in 1999. In 2007 he succeeded Timothy Duke as Registrar of the College of Arms until 2014, and has been a Member of Council of The Heraldry Society since 1997. He retired as Windsor Herald on 31 May 2017. Hunt was Clerk to HM Commission of Lieutenancy for the City of London (1990–2013) before being appointed to the Lieutenancy in 2012. He was an elected Member of Common Council of the City of London Corporation (2004–2013) and is a liveryman and Past Master (2000–2001) of the Playing-Card Makers' Company. Somerset Herald
Somerset Herald of Arms in Ordinary is an officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. In the year 1448 Somerset Herald is known to have served the Duke of Somerset, but by the time of the coronation of King Henry VII in 1485 his successor appears to have been raised to the rank of a royal officer, when he was the only herald to receive coronation liveries. By 1525 Somerset was again in private service, on the staff of the Duke of Richmond and Somerset, Henry Fitzroy, although he was appointed by the King and shared the heralds' fees as a herald extraordinary. On the death of that nobleman in 1536 the herald returned to the service of the crown, and all later officers called Somerset have been members of the royal household as heralds in ordinary. Garter King Of Arms
The Garter Principal King of Arms (also Garter King of Arms or simply Garter) is the senior King of Arms, and the senior Officer of Arms of the College of Arms, the heraldic authority with jurisdiction over England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The position has existed since 1415. Garter is responsible to the Earl Marshal for the running of the college.
