Thomas Wilkins (conductor)
Thomas Wilkins (born c.1956) is an orchestra conductor. Early life and education Wilkins was born in Norfolk, Virginia and grew-up in a housing project, the son of a single mother and welfare recipient. His inspiration to become an orchestra conductor came from a performance of ''The Star-Spangled Banner'' he attended when he was eight years old. Wilkins received a bachelor's degree in music education from the Shenandoah Conservatory in 1978, and a master of music degree in orchestral conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1982. Teaching and conducting Wilkins has taught at North Park University, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He worked as assistant director of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. Conducting is the art of directing a musical performance, such as an orchestral or choral concert. It has been defined as "the art of directing the simultaneous performance of several players or singers by the use of gesture." The primary duties of the conductor are to interpret the score in a way which reflects the specific indications in that score, set the tempo, ensure correct entries by ensemble members, and "shape" the phrasing where appropriate. Conductors communicate with their musicians primarily through hand gestures, usually with the aid of a baton, and may use other gestures or signals such as eye contact. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is an American orchestra based in Detroit, Michigan. Its primary performance venue is Orchestra Hall at the Max M.
