Thomas Wiles
Thomas Wiles (19 June 1861Debrett's House of Commons 1918 – 18 May 1951), was a British Liberal Party politician. Family He was the youngest son of Joseph Wiles of St Albans. He married in 1890, Winifred Alice Crassweller of Highbury. They had one son and two daughters. He was educated at Amersham Hall School. Business career He was Life Governor of Joseph Wiles & Son, Ltd, grain merchants, of Mark Lane, London. He was Chairman of the Corn Exchange. He was Chairman of the Anglo-Portuguese Colonial and Overseas Bank, Ltd. Political career He was elected to the London County Council for South-West Bethnal Green in a by-election 3 February 1900, and took his seat the following week. For some years he was Whip to the Progressive party. He was Chairman of the Port of London Authority. He was Chairman of the Royal Surgical Aid Society. A member of parliament (MP) is the representative in parliament of the people who live in their electoral district. In many countries with bicameral parliaments, this term refers only to members of the lower house since upper house members often have a different title. Charles Frederick Higham
Sir Charles Frederick Higham (17 January 1876 – 24 December 1938) was a British publicist, advertising consultant prominent in World War I and a Conservative Party politician elected as the Member of Parliament for Islington South in the County of London for one term, from 1918 to 1922. Background, upbringing and emigration Born in Walthamstow, he was the eldest son of Charles and Emily Higham. His father, a solicitor's clerk, died when he was nine years old. Along with his mother and two brothers he emigrated to the United States shortly after his father's death. Leaving home aged 13, he had a series of varied jobs including chemist's assistant, newspaper reporter and assistant hotel manager. Albert Rollit
Sir Albert Kaye Rollit (1842 – 12 August 1922) was a British politician, lawyer, and businessman. Career Born in Hull, he became a solicitor and went on to become president of the Law Society. He later became a shipowner. He was Mayor of Hull from 1883 to 1885. In 1886, he was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for the South Islington constituency. In 1892 he put forward a private member's bill in favour of women's suffrage, which failed narrowly. Having opposed Chamberlain's Tariff Reform proposals, he was defeated in the 1906 general election, and failed to get elected as a Liberal in Epsom in 1910. As a businessman he was well known on the Continent of Europe and acted as consul-general for Romania from 1911 until his death. He was also a magistrate in Berkshire, where he resided at Sutherland Grange at Dedworth, adjoining Windsor, with his second wife. 1918 United Kingdom General Election
The 1918 United Kingdom general election was called immediately after the Armistice with Germany which ended the First World War, and was held on Saturday, 14 December 1918. The governing coalition, under Prime Minister David Lloyd George, sent letters of endorsement to candidates who supported the coalition government. These were nicknamed "Coalition Coupons", and led to the election being known as the "coupon election". The result was a massive landslide in favour of the coalition, comprising primarily the Conservatives and Coalition Liberals, with massive losses for Liberals who were not endorsed. Nearly all the Liberal MPs without coupons were defeated, including party leader H. H. Asquith. It was the first general election to include on a single day all eligible voters of the United Kingdom, although the vote count was delayed until 28 December so that the ballots cast by soldiers serving overseas could be included in the tallies.
