Thomas Whyte (merchant)
Sir Thomas White (1492 – 12 February 1567) was an English cloth merchant, Lord Mayor of London in 1553, and a civic benefactor and founder of St John's College, Oxford. Biography Thomas White was born in Reading, Berkshire, the son of William White, a clothier of Reading, and his wife, Mary, daughter of John Kibblewhite of South Fawley, also in Berkshire. He was brought up in London. Sir Thomas was twice married, to Avicia (died 1558) and to Joan. A principal member of the guild of Merchant Taylors, he served as Sheriff of London in 1547, and was elected Lord Mayor of London in 1553. He was knighted in the same year by Queen Mary I. He was a member of the commission for the trial of Lady Jane Grey. In 1555, inspired by the example of Thomas Pope, founder of Trinity College, Oxford, White obtained a royal licence for the foundation of St John's College, Oxford, dedicated to the patron saint of the Merchant Taylors and established in the buildings of the dissolved Cist ...

Thomas Whyte (academic)
Thomas Whyte (or White; – 12 June 1588) was an English clergyman and academic at the University of Oxford. Whyte was educated at Winchester College, where he gained a scholarship aged 12 in 1526, and New College, Oxford, holding a fellowship 1532–1553, and graduating B.C.L. 1541, D.C.L. 1553. Whyte was elected Warden (head) of New College, Oxford, in 1553, a post he held until 1573. He was twice Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University during 1557–8 and 1562–4. He was Archdeacon of Berkshire from 1557 and Chancellor of Salisbury Cathedral from 1571, holding both offices until his death. Thomas White (died 1580) was an English state official who came to prominence during the Dudley conspiracy of 1555 against Mary I of England. Biography He was the son of John White. He lived in Tuxford in Nottinghamshire. Thomas married Agnes (aka Anne) Cecil, the daughter of Richard Cecil. Agnes' brother was Queen Elizabeth I's great Lord Treasurer, Sir William Cecil, 1st Lord Burghley). During the plot, Sir Henry Dudley, a kinsman of the Duke of Northumberland, tried to place Princess Elizabeth on the throne of England, disposing of Mary. Thomas White was an official in the Exchequer. His part in the plot was to have been a minor one whereby he was to have arrange the robbery of the Exchequer to provide finance for the plotters to pay for the army of exiles and mercenaries they were attempting to bring over from the Continent.
