Thomas Thompson (1754–1828)
Thomas Thompson (1754–1828), was a Kingston upon Hull banker and Wesleyan preacher. The father of Thomas Perronet Thompson, he had the gothic mansion, Cottingham Castle, built in Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire. Biography Thomas Thompson was born 5 April 1754, in relatively humble beginnings, his father was a yeoman in Owborough Grange, Swine, East Riding of Yorkshire. He was educated by the Rev. William Stead of Swine. He married Philothea Perronet on 29 August 1781; she was a granddaughter of Vincent Perronet. After having worked for fourteen years as a clerk to the merchants ''Wilberforce and Smith'' of Hull. Abel Smith, a partner of the firm made him manager of the Hull branch of his bank in 1784, and in 1788 he became a partner in the bank and merchant business. Thompson acquired shareholdings in Sykes, Son & Co., Hull metal merchants, and in the Hull Dock Company; he became chairman of the Dock Company in 1812. Tommy Thompson (rugby Union)
Gerald "Tommy" W. Thompson (4 October 1886 – 20 June 1916) was a South African rugby union player who played for Somerset West Rugby Club. He was selected for the provincial team of Western Province in 1912. He was selected to participate in the 1912–13 South Africa rugby tour to the British Isles and France, and was capped in three tests, against , and , all in 1912. He played in a further 12 matches against club sides. He was considered one of the two best of an outstanding pack of South African forwards. At the outbreak of the First World War, Thompson willingly volunteered for service, first in South West Africa, and then in the German East Africa campaign, with the 5th South African Infantry. He was killed in action at Kangata, taking a bullet in the neck. He is buried in the Dar es Salaam War Cemetery, near his fellow countryman and teammate Jacky Morkel, who died a few weeks before him. Tommy George Thompson (born November 19, 1941) is an American Republican politician who most recently served as interim president of the University of Wisconsin System from 2020 to 2022. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the 42nd governor of Wisconsin from 1987 to 2001 and 19th United States secretary of Health and Human Services from 2001 to 2005, in the cabinet of President George W. Bush. He is the longest-serving governor in Wisconsin history, holding office from January 1987 until February 2001, and is the only person to be elected to the office four times. During his tenure as governor he was also chair of Amtrak, the nation's passenger rail service. Thomas Norman Thompson (May 22, 1947 - September 30, 2019) was an American infielder and manager in minor league baseball. As a player, he stood 6'1" (1.85 meters) tall and weighed 160 pounds (73 kg). He threw and batted right-handed. He was born in Upland, California. Thompson graduated from Chaffey Union High School and attended Chaffey College and the University of Kansas. He then played eight seasons (1967–1974) as a shortstop, third baseman and second baseman in the farm system of the St. Louis Cardinals, spending one season, 1973, at the Triple-A level, where he batted only .220 for the Tulsa Oilers. Thompson was an infield instructor in the St. Louis organization before beginning his managerial career on June 14, 1977, taking over for Buzzy Keller as skipper of the Cardinals' Arkansas Travelers Double-A affiliate. Rupert Lockhart "Tommy" Thompson (May 19, 1910 – May 24, 1971) was an American outfielder in Major League Baseball who played for the Boston Braves (1933–36), Chicago White Sox (1938–39), and St. Louis Browns (1939). He was born in Elkhart, Illinois and died in Auburn, California. In total he played 22 seasons of professional baseball beginning with the Bloomington Bloomers of the Illinois–Indiana–Iowa League in 1928. Thomas Thompson (born 24 February 1938) is a former English cricketer. Thompson was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm off break. He was born at Workington, Cumberland. Thompson made his debut for Cumberland in the 1955 Minor Counties Championship against Durham. Between 1955 and 1961, he made 32 Minor Counties Championship appearances for Cumberland. He joined Leicestershire for the 1963 season, making his first-class debut against Derbyshire at Grace Road in the 1963 County Championship. He made a further first-class appearance in that season against Nottinghamshire, before making seven further appearances in the 1964 County Championship, the last of which came against Essex. A bowler, Thompson took 17 wickets in his nine first-class matches for Leicestershire, which came at an average of 29.23, with best figures of 3/53. Thomas Palmer Thompson (born August 15, 1995) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a right-back for Major League Soccer club San Jose Earthquakes. Career Thompson played one year of college soccer at Indiana University where he scored five goals and one assist in 12 matches and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2013, before signing a Homegrown Player contract with San Jose Earthquakes on March 14, 2014.
