This is a list in alphabetical order of cricketers who have played for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club (Northants) in top-class matches since 1905 when the club joined the County Championship and the team was elevated to official first-class status. Northants has been classified as a List A cricket, List A team since the beginning of limited overs cricket in 1963 and as a top-level Twenty20, Twenty20 team since the inauguration of the Twenty20 Cup in 2003. The details are the player's usual name followed by the years in which he was active as a Northants player and then his name is given as it would appear on modern match scorecards. Note that many players represented other top-class teams besides Northants and that some played for the club in Minor Counties Cricket Championship, minor counties cricket before 1905. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Michael Henry John Allen (7 January 1933 – 6 October 1995) was an English cricketer who played for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, Northamptonshire from 1956 to 1963 and Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Derbyshire from 1964 to 1966. Allen was born in Bedford and attended Bedford School. A right-handed batsman and a left-arm slow bowler, he started his cricket career at Northamptonshire, who finished in fourth position in the County Championship in his debut season, 1956. Allen debuted against Worcestershire County Cricket Club, Worcestershire in May and played in more than half the matches in the season. In 1957, Allen moved into a regular first-team place and finished high in the bowling averages, as Northamptonshire finished second in the County Championship table. Raymond Reginald 'Ray' Bailey (born 16 May 1944) is an English former cricketer and footballer. He was born in Bedford, Bedfordshire, where he was educated and proved himself a sporting all rounder by captaining his school rugby team and playing in goal for the Bedfordshire Schools football team. Cricket As a cricketer, Bailey was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast-medium and who could on occasion play as a wicket-keeper. He made his debut in county cricket for Bedfordshire against Staffordshire in the 1963 Minor Counties Championship. Hamer Fraser Bagnall was an English cricketer who played for Northamptonshire between 1921 and 1928. He was born in Farnham, Surrey on 18 February 1904 and died in Marylebone, London on 2 September 1974. Playing also for Cambridge University and the Marylebone Cricket Club, Bagnall appeared in 85 first-class matches as a righthanded batsman who bowled leg spin. Mohammad Azharullah (born 25 December 1983) is an English Pakistani cricketer, who most recently played in England for Northamptonshire. Azharullah is a right-arm fast-medium bowler who also bats right-handed. Career in Pakistan Azharullah made his first-class cricket debut for Multan in December 2004 against Karachi Whites. Bernard Atkinson
Bernard Gerard Wensley Atkinson (11 September 1900 – 4 September 1966) was an English first-class cricketer. Atkinson was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast-medium. He was born at Puddington, Devon. Educated at St Paul's School, London, Atkinson played for the school cricket team from 1916 to 1919, heading the batting averages in his last two years there. He later attended the University of Cambridge, but did not represent the university in first-class cricket. He would make his debut in first-class cricket for Northamptonshire against Kent in the 1922 County Championship. He made ten first-class appearances for the county in that season, scoring 257 runs at an average of 17.13, with a high score of 91, his only half century score of the season. Craig Atkins
Craig Atkins (born 29 May 1966) was an Australian cricketer. He was a left-handed batsman and left-arm slow bowler who played for Northamptonshire. He was born in Melbourne. Atkins made his Second XI debut for the side during the 1990 season, though he did not make another appearance in the competition until 1994, when he played for Essex Second XI. The following month, he also played in matches for Hampshire, Leicestershire, and Northamptonshire Second XI teams. Receiving British citizenship in early 1995, Atkins was signed to a one-year deal with Northamptonshire in February 1995. Sydney Thomas Askham (9 September 1896 – 21 August 1916) was an English cricketer who played for Northamptonshire in 1914. Born in Wellingborough, he attended Wellingborough School where he was, according to ''Wisden Cricketers' Almanack'', "an exceptional boy cricketer who met with astonishing success as a bowler and is a fine batsman too".Radd, p.15. Askham appeared in five first-class matches as a right arm fast medium bowler who was a righthanded batsman. Martin Ashenden
Martin Ashenden (born 4 August 1937) is an English former first-class cricketer. He played for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, Northamptonshire between 1959 and 1961 and for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Gloucestershire between 1962 and 1965. Ashenden was a right-arm fast-medium bowler. On his twenty-first birthday in 1958, playing for Bedfordshire County Cricket Club, Bedfordshire against Shropshire County Cricket Club, Shropshire in the Minor Counties Championship, he took 10 for 15 in the first innings, dismissing Shropshire for 37. He made his first-class debut the next season, and in his third match for Northamptonshire he took 3 for 69 and 4 for 50 against Essex County Cricket Club, Essex. Arnold Peter Arnold (16 October 1926 – 6 September 2021) was a cricketer who played first-class cricket from 1951 to 1960. He was a right-handed batsman. Career Peter Arnold learned to play cricket at St Bede's College, Christchurch, New Zealand. He went to England in 1950 seeking a career as a professional cricketer. He played for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, Northamptonshire from 1951 to 1960, and for Canterbury cricket team, Canterbury in New Zealand for one season in 1953–54.
