Thomas Smart (New South Wales Politician)
Thomas Ware Smart (1810 – 28 May 1881), was a politician in colonial New South Wales, Colonial Treasurer in 1863 and 1865. Smart was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He was the representative for Sydney Hamlets in the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1 September 1851 to 28 February 1855. He represented Glebe in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1860 to 1869. He was Treasurer from 21 March to 15 October 1863 and from 3 February to 19 October 1865; he was also Secretary for Public Works from 20 October 1865 to 21 January 1866. He was again appointed to the Legislative Council in 1870 and served until his death. Smart died at Darling Point Darling Point is a harbourside eastern suburb of Sydney, Australia. William Munnings Arnold
The Hon. William Munnings Arnold (10 October 1819 – 1 March 1875) was an Australian politician, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1856 until his death. He held numerous ministerial positions between 1860 and 1865 including Secretary for Public Works] and Secretary for Lands (New South Wales), Secretary for Lands. He was the Speaker between 1865 and 1875. Early life Arnold was born in the village of Ellough in Suffolk, England and was the son of an Anglican clergyman. He was educated at home and then at private schools in Lowestoft and High Wycombe. Arnold migrated to Australia in 1839 and made a substantial fortune from investments in the pastoral industry and gold trading. He invested in a number of large properties on the Paterson River in which he drowned during major flooding in 1875. John Campbell (Australian Politician)
John Campbell (25 July 1802 – 22 January 1886) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1856 and between 1861 and 1886. He was also a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1856 and 1860. Early life Campbell was the eldest son of Sophia Palmer and Robert Campbell a pioneer Sydney merchant and member of the Legislative Council. He was also the elder brother of Robert Campbell Jr who, at various times, was a member of the Legislative Council and Assembly and Colonial Treasurer. In addition, his youngest brother Charles was a member of the Legislative Council, and his nephew William was a member of the Legislative Council and Assembly between 1868 and 1906. Campbell was educated in England between 1810 and 1820 and joined his father's business after returning to Australia. Stuart Donaldson
Sir Stuart Alexander Donaldson (16 December 1812 – 11 January 1867) was the first Premier of the Colony of New South Wales. Early life Donaldson was born in London, England. He entered his father's firm at the age of 15 and was sent first to Mexico (1831-1834), for business training. After returning to England in May 1834, Donaldson travelled to Sydney, New South Wales, aboard the ''Emma Eugenia'' where he arrived on 5 May 1835. He returned to London between 1841 and 1844. Career In 1848, Donaldson was elected a member of the original unicameral Legislative Council of New South Wales, representing the County of Durham from February 1848 to January 1853. Comments made while running for re-election in 1851, led Sir Thomas Mitchell to demand a public apology. George Wigram Allen
Sir George Wigram Allen (16 May 1824 – 23 July 1885) was an Australian politician and philanthropist. He was Speaker in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly 1875–1883. Allen was held in high esteem. As speaker he showed dignity, courtesy and ability; it was said of him: 'A man of calm judgment and much practical wisdom'. Early life Allen was born in Surry Hills, New South Wales, the eldest son of George Allen (attorney and solicitor) and his wife Jane, ''née'' Bowden. He was educated under William Cape and at Sydney College, where he showed ability in classics and mathematics. In 1841, Allen was articled to his father and he became a solicitor in 1846. Arthur Holroyd
Arthur Todd Holroyd (1 December 1806 – 15 June 1887) was an Australian lawyer and politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1851 and 1856. He was also a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for two periods between 1856 and 1857 and again between 1861 and 1864. Biography Early life Arthur Todd Holroyd was born in London on 1 December 1806, the youngest child of the merchant Stephen Holroyd and Elizabeth (''née'' Lofthouse). His father died in January 1810 when Arthur was aged three years. Saul Samuel
Sir Saul Samuel, 1st Baronet (2 November 182029 August 1900) was an Australian colonial merchant, member of parliament, pastoralist, and prominent Jew. Samuel achieved many breakthroughs for Jews in the colonial community of New South Wales including the first Jew to become a magistrate, the first Jew elected to parliament, the first Jew to become a minister of the Crown.
