Thomas Oliver (architect)
Thomas Oliver (14 January 1791 – December 1857) was an English classical architect and surveyor active in Newcastle upon Tyne. He was one of a number of talented local architects who worked with Richard Grainger on the development of Newcastle, but his work tends to be overshadowed by that of John Dobson who has been given a great deal of the credit for the central part of the city referred to as Grainger Town. Background Thomas Oliver was born in Crailing, Roxburghshire on 14 January 1791, the son of weaver Adam Oliver (1749–1793) and Elizabeth Bell (1762–1829). He was educated at Jedburgh School. Oliver married twice, first in 1814 to Margaret Lorimer, the daughter of a Kelso mason and second in about 1840 to Elizabeth Best (1800–1886) from Yorkshire. He died unexpectedly on 9 December 1857 at 3 Picton Place, Newcastle upon Tyne. He was buried in Jesmond Old Cemetery (previously Newcastle General Cemetery). Oliver Typewriter Company
The Oliver Typewriter Company was an American typewriter manufacturer headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The Oliver Typewriter was one of the first "visible print" typewriters, meaning text was visible to the typist as it was entered. Oliver typewriters were marketed heavily for home use, using local distributors and sales on credit. Oliver produced more than one million machines between 1895 and 1928 and licensed its designs to several international firms. Competitive pressure and financial troubles resulted in the company's liquidation in 1928. The company's assets were purchased by investors who formed The British Oliver Typewriter Company, which manufactured and licensed the machines until its own closure in the late 1950s. Thomas Olivers
Thomas Olivers (1725–1799) was a Methodist preacher and hymn-writer from Tregynon, Montgomeryshire, Wales. He was also author of the ''Arminian Magazine'' from 1775 to 1789, when he was dropped from the position by John Wesley for numerous printing errors. Early life Thomas Olivers was born in 1725 in the Welsh village of Tregynon in Montgomeryshire. Both his father and his mother died when he was four years old. He grew up to be an apprentice shoemaker and he became a profligate and reckless young man. After his involvement in a scandal which forced him to leave his home, Olivers travelled to Bristol where he heard George Whitfield preach on the text "is not this a brand plucked from the fire?" (). Olivers was converted and stated a desire to follow Whitfield however one of Whitfield's preachers discouraged him and instead he joined the Methodist society and met one of the founders of Methodism, John Wesley there. Tom Olliver
Thomas Olliver (1812 – 7 January 1874), born Oliver or Olivere, was a steeplechase jockey and racehorse trainer who won three Grand Nationals as a rider in the 1840s and 1850s. Olliver began riding at the age of six, not uncommon for the times, before becoming a stable lad to his uncle, one Mr Page, and later progressing into racing over obstacles, falling in his first ride at Finchley. Olliver was among the seventeen riders who participated in the first official running of the Grand National in 1839, finishing second on Seventy Four. He went on to ride in a record nineteen Nationals, a feat not equalled until 2014. His first victory came in 1842 when he piloted Gaylad. He became the first dual winning rider the following year when he rode Vanguard. The latter was later presented to Olliver as a gift, and he held the horse in such high esteem that when Vanguard died, Olliver had his hide used to make a sofa, which today is the property of Aintree racecourse.
