Thomas Moran House
The Thomas and Mary Nimmo Moran House is a historic house museum at 229 Main Street in East Hampton, New York. Built in 1884, it was the home of Mary Nimmo Moran and Thomas Moran, both accomplished painters of the nineteenth century. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965 for its association with Thomas Moran, the first major painter to bring scenes of the American West to the rest of the country. and The house has been restored and opened to the public by reservation under the care of the East Hampton Historical Society. Description and history The Thomas and Mary Nimmo Moran House stands in the village of East Hampton, on the west side of Main Street between Woods Lane and Mill Hill Lane. New York State Route 27 (NY 27) is a long state highway that runs east–west from Interstate 278 (I-278) in the New York City borough of Brooklyn to Montauk Point State Park on Long Island, New York. Its two most prominent components are Sunrise Highway and Montauk Highway, the latter of which includes the Montauk Point State Parkway. NY 27 acts as the primary east–west highway on southern Long Island east of the interchange with the Heckscher State Parkway in Islip Terrace. East Hampton (village), New York
The Village of East Hampton is a village in Suffolk County, New York. It is located in the town of East Hampton on the South Fork of eastern Long Island. The population was 1,083 at the time of the 2010 census, 251 less than in the year 2000. It is a center of the summer resort and upscale locality at the East End of Long Island known as The Hamptons and is generally considered one of the area's two most prestigious communities. History 17th century The village of Easthampton was founded in 1648 by Puritan farmers who worshiped as Presbyterians. The community was based on farming, with some fishing and whaling. Whales that washed up on the beach were butchered, and whales were hunted offshore with rowboats sometimes manned by Montauk Indians. Robert William Wood (March 4, 1889 – March 14, 1979) was an American landscape painter. He was born in England, emigrated to the United States and rose to prominence in the 1950s with the sales of millions of his color reproductions. He was active in the art colonies of San Antonio, Texas in the 1930s, Monterey, California in the 1940s and Laguna Beach in the 1950s. Biography Life and work Robert William Wood was born in Sandgate, Kent, England, near the White Cliffs of Dover. His father, W. L. Wood, was a renowned home and church painter who recognized and supported his son's talent. He forced his son to paint by keeping him inside rather than letting him play with his friends. At age 12, Wood entered the South Kensington School of Art in nearby Folkestone. While in school, Wood won four first awards and three second awards for his paintings.
