Thomas Mayer (American Economist)
Thomas Mayer (January 18, 1927 – June 12, 2015) was an Austrian-born American economist who was professor of economics at the University of California, Davis. He previously taught at West Virginia University, the University of Notre Dame, Michigan State University, and the University of California, Berkeley. He is known for his work in monetary policy and economic methodology. Mayer received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1953. Early life Mayer was an only child born to middle-class Jewish parents in Vienna, Austria, in 1927. He was not a good student, except for subjects that he liked and only barely passed the test to enter gymnasium. The Anschluss made it difficult for his father to find work and the family began trying to get out of Austria in 1938. The difficulty was to get a visa to enter another country; leaving Austria was then not a problem. Mayer's parents applied for a visa in March 1938. Thomas Mayer (born 3 January 1954) is a German economist who was chief economist of Deutsche Bank from January 2010 to May 2012. Born in Backnang, Baden-Württemberg, Mayer attended the University of Kiel, earning a doctorate in 1982. Between 1983 and 1990 he worked for the International Monetary Fund, before moving on to the financial sector. After working for Salomon Brothers and Goldman Sachs, he joined Deutsche Bank's London office in 2002. The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is a symphony orchestra based in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It is the smallest of the six orchestras established by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). History The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra was established in 1948, and gave its first concert on 25 May in the Hobart Town Hall, under the baton of Joseph Post. The soloist was the Tasmanian-born pianist Eileen Joyce, who performed the Piano Concerto in A minor by Edvard Grieg. From 1973 to 1998 its home was the Odeon Theatre, a renovated former cinema built in 1916 as a replica of New York's Strand Theater. It has now moved to the Federation Concert Hall. In 1998, a 50th anniversary concert was held in the original venue, the Town Hall, under its then chief conductor David Porcelijn. Kevin Bramble (born September 19, 1972) is an American disabled ski racer, freeskier, and monoski designer/builder from the Cape May Court House section of Middle Township, New Jersey, United States. He competes as a monoskier in the LW 12-1 class and is known as a "speed specialist," preferring to compete in downhill and super G. Career Bramble grew up in New Jersey and began skiing recreationally in Pennsylvania's Poconos at age 11. By 1994, he was a serious snowboarder and occasional skier living in the Lake Tahoe area when he became paralyzed in a snowboarding accident. He soon taught himself to monoski and moved to Winter Park, Colorado, where he joined the Winter Park Disabled Ski Team. He returned to the Tahoe area soon after, settling in Truckee, California, but having acquired the racing skills that he needed.
