Thomas Martyn
Thomas Martyn (23 September 1735 – 3 June 1825) was an English botanist and Professor of Botany at Cambridge University. He is sometimes confused with the conchologist and entomologist of the same name. Life Thomas Martyn was the son of the botanist John Martyn (1699–1768). He was educated in Chelsea and at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1756 and becoming a fellow of Sidney Sussex College and being ordained deacon in 1758. In 1759 he became MA and priest. In 1762 he succeeded his father as Professor of Botany at the University, and held the post until his death in 1825, though he only lectured until 1796 'as the subject was not popular'. Thomas Martyn's professorship at Cambridge lasted for 63 years, while his father had held the same post for 29 years. Thomas Martyn was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1786. Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991. After Marshall, Thomas is the second African American to serve on the Court and its longest-serving member since Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018. Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia. After his father abandoned the family, he was raised by his grandfather in a poor Gullah community near Savannah. Growing up as a devout Catholic, Thomas originally intended to be a priest in the Catholic Church but was frustrated over the church's insufficient attempts to combat racism. Thomas Martyn (probably 1760 – 1816) was an English zoologist, conchologist and entomologist. He should not be confused with the botanist of the same name. Life Little is known about Thomas Martyn's life and nothing about his parents, his wife and his children. It is believed that he was born in 1760 in Coventry. Later he lived at several addresses in London. At 10 Great Marlborough Street, Westminster he established an academy for the painting of Natural History. Besides English, Martyn spoke French and Latin. Thomas Martyn (born 4 June 1971) is a former Ireland international rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, and coached in the 2000s. He played at representative level for Ireland, and at club level for Oldham ( Heritage № 954), St. Helens ( Heritage № 1042) in the Championship, and, subsequently, Super League and Leigh, as a . Thomas "Tommy" Martyn (2 August 1946 – 6 November 2016) was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. He played at representative level for Great Britain (non-test matches), England, and at club level for Batley, Warrington and Leigh, as a , i.e. number 11 or 12, during the era of contested scrums. Thomas Óge Martyn, Mayor of Galway, fl. 1533-c. 1577. Early life Martyn was a merchant of Galway and a member of the Martyn (surname), Martyn family, one of the Tribes of Galway. He was the son of former Mayor of Galway, Wylliam Martin. West Bridge and Mills In 1558 he obtained a grant from Mary I of England, Queen Mary to build a mill on the west side of the River Corrib, Corrib river, on condition that he build a new stone bridge defended with gates and battlements. It was completed in 1562 and bore a plaque declaring that Thomas Óge and his wife Evelina Lynch ''"caused this bridge and mill to be made"''. The bridge and mills was demolished c. 1800 and rebuilt as the Bridge Mills by the Murphy family. The rebuilt bridge is now called O'Brien's Bridge.
