Thomas Maguire (priest)
Thomas Maguire (May 9, 1776 – July 17, 1854) was an American-born Canadian Roman Catholic priest, a vicar general and an educator. Maguire was born in Philadelphia to new immigrants from Ireland. Loyalists, the Maguire family relocated to Halifax, Nova Scotia in the same year. Maguire was interested in education and in May 1821 Joseph-Octave Plessis appointed him as part of a committee at Quebec to prepare a constitution for the Quebec Education Society. The committee was led by Joseph-François Perrault. Thomas Aquinas Maguire is an American writer and illustrator of children's picture books. His first book '' A Growling Place'' was published by ''Simply Read Books'' in August 2007. His second release from Simply Read Books '' Three Little Dreams'' is a collection of three fold-out books, it was released in the summer of 2010. In 2011 Simply Read Books released Maguires' third picture book '' The Wild Swan''. Books '' A Growling Place'', Simply Read books, 2007. A traditional storybook about a girl who rescues a stuffed bear. The book features a simplified chapter system. Thomas Herbert Maguire
Thomas Herbert Maguire (1821 – 1895) was an English artist and engraver, noted for his portraits of prominent figures. Maguire was a brilliant pupil of master lithographer and line-engraver, Richard James Lane (1800-1872), one of the favourite collaborators of the Swiss portrait painter, Alfred Edward Chalon in the pages of the ''Illustrated London News''. The series of 60 scientific portraits by Maguire was privately commissioned by George Ransome, FLS, of Ipswich, in connection with the foundation of the Ipswich Museum. They were executed cumulatively between 1847 and 1852, as the Museum obtained fresh scientific sponsors. Some were made by the artist from life, and others from photographic portraits or (in the case of the Revd William Kirby) from an oil portrait. Manchester Martyrs
The "Manchester Martyrs" () is a term used by Irish nationalists to refer to three men—William Philip Allen, Michael Larkin and Michael O'Brien—who were executed following their conviction of murder in 1867 after an attack on a police van in Manchester, England, in which a police officer was accidentally shot dead, an incident that was known at the time as the "Manchester Outrages". The three were members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, also known as the Fenians, an organisation dedicated to ending British rule in Ireland, and were among a group of 30–40 Fenians who attacked a horse-drawn police van transporting two arrested leaders of the Brotherhood, Thomas J. Kelly and Timothy Deasy, to Belle Vue Gaol. Tom Maguire (28 March 1892 – 5 July 1993) was an Irish republican who held the rank of commandant-general in the Western Command of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and led the South Mayo flying column. Early life Tom Maguire was born 28 March 1892 in Cross, County Mayo, the fourth of eleven children of William Maguire, and Mary Grehan. He joined the Irish Volunteers on their foundation in 1913, and after the 1916 Easter rising, he formed the first company of Volunteers in Cross in 1917. He was elected as a member of Mayo County Council in June 1920 and was subsequently chairman of Ballinrobe district council. Irish Republican Army On 18 September 1920, the Mayo Brigade was reorganized, it was split up into four separate brigades. Maguire was appointed commander of the South Mayo Brigade. Tom Maguire (29 December 1865 – 8 March 1895) was a British socialist, trade union organiser and poet from Leeds. Early life Maguire was born to an Irish immigrant family in the poverty-stricken Bank area of Leeds. As a young boy he sang in the choir at St Anne's Church where he was noted for his 'musical voice and poetic tongue'. He received part of his education at Sunday school. Growing up he showed appreciation of his Irish heritage and immersed himself in the music and literature. He was drawn to Romantic poets, such as Shelley and Keats, and began writing his own poetry around this time. After leaving school, he took a job as a photographer's assistant.
