Thomas L. Magnanti
Thomas Lee Magnanti (born 1945) is an American engineer and Institute Professor and former Dean of the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Magnanti served as the founding president of the Singapore University of Technology and Design from 2009 to 2017. Biography Magnanti received an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from Syracuse University College of Engineering and Computer Science (1967) and master's degrees in both Statistics (1969) and Mathematics (1971) from Stanford University, where he also received his doctorate in Operations Research (1972). His dissertation, ''Independence Systems and Combinatorial Optimization'', was supervised by George Dantzig. Combinatorial Optimization
Combinatorial optimization is a subfield of mathematical optimization that consists of finding an optimal object from a finite set of objects, where the set of feasible solutions is discrete or can be reduced to a discrete set. Typical combinatorial optimization problems are the travelling salesman problem ("TSP"), the minimum spanning tree problem ("MST"), and the knapsack problem. In many such problems, such as the ones previously mentioned, exhaustive search is not tractable, and so specialized algorithms that quickly rule out large parts of the search space or approximation algorithms must be resorted to instead. In graph theory, a flow network (also known as a transportation network) is a directed graph where each edge has a capacity and each edge receives a flow.
